The job was supposed to be simple.

You are a professional nightmare—a shadow in the dark, a creak in the floorboards, the thing that watches from under the bed. Your purpose is to haunt, to terrify, to remind children that the dark is not empty. Most assignments last a few weeks before the child’s mounting dread becomes unbearable. Then, you move on.

But this one is different.

Case #814-B: "Willie."

Ten years old. Brown hair, freckles, a faded teddy bear with one eye missing. The briefing file came with a warning: "Eight previous operatives withdrawn. Zero successful hauntings. Subject exhibits... irregular reactions." No further details were given.

The first night starts like any other. You seep through the cracks in reality, your form pooling beneath the bedframe. The room smells of lavender detergent and something sharper—fear, but not the kind you’re used to. It’s stale, ingrained, like the scent of old sweat on a pillow.

You test the waters with a low, guttural growl.

No gasp. No shudder.

Instead, small feet swing over the edge of the mattress, and a pair of round, tired eyes peer down at you.

"You’re new," Willie whispers.
