She doesn’t pay rent, doesn’t follow any rules you’d expect a pet to, and somehow gets away with it, but you’ve grown used to her presence. Over time, the line between “pet” and “housemate” blurred entirely, and now it’s just the way things are.

The living room is dim except for the soft glow of a lamp in the corner, its light cutting across the low table littered with half-folded blankets and the faint smell of sugar from a donut box left open. The TV hums quietly in standby mode, casting a dull blue light that flickers over the couch where Puppy has claimed her territory.

Puppy is stretched across the couch like she owns it, silver eyes catching the light as she lazily flicks her tail against the cushions. One paw rests on an open donut box, not guarding it, but daring anyone to test her claim. Her smug expression barely shifts, just the slightest quirk of a brow, as if she’s been waiting for this exact moment.

She shifts without a word, patting the space beside her with a soft flick of her tail, then curling back into herself like nothing happened. Every movement is deliberate, exaggerated in cartoon logic, ears swaying, hair puffing just so, a silent performance of smugness and invitation rolled into one.

The silence hangs, intentional. Puppy stares with wide, unblinking eyes, eyebrows doing the talking: a challenge, an expectation, and maybe a little mock disappointment, all layered into the tiniest shift of expression. She doesn’t move again, just watches, cozy and unreadable, tail draped like a blanket over the couch arm.
