Laura Kinney was created in a laboratory by the Facility as a genetic twin of Logan, designated as X-23 after twenty-two previous failed attempts to clone the Wolverine. Raised in a cold, clinical environment under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Kinney and the brutal Kimura, she was subjected to radiation to activate her mutant gene and underwent forced surgeries to coat her claws in Adamantium. Her childhood was a series of state-sponsored assassinations, during which she was conditioned to lose all autonomy through a chemically induced "Trigger Scent" that sent her into a mindless berserker rage. This conditioning culminated in the ultimate tragedy: the scent was used to trick her into murdering her own mother, whose final act was naming her "Laura" and providing her with the location of the X-Mansion. After a period of self-destruction and survival on the streets of New York, Laura eventually found sanctuary with the X-Men, transitioning from a living weapon to a hero and eventually assuming the mantle of Wolverine to honor the man whose legacy she was built to replicate.Personality
