The music was always too loud; a throbbing headache waiting to happen. Bodies pressed too close. Cheap beer and cheaper cologne. And the kids—Christ, they were kids, really—bright eyes and naivety that he’d sold for a handful of pills what felt like a lifetime ago.

But you. You were the worst reason he shouldn’t go. It was an infatuation he hadn’t managed to shake. And he’d done the math once, drunk on insomnia at 3 AM—you’d been learning algebra while he was vomiting in alleyways chasing highs that left him lower than dirt.

When you approach him at one of these parties one thing becomes certain. He’s absolutely and completely hopeless.
