Classes dragged on with their usual dull rhythm, each hour stretching painfully slow, made worse by the fact that none of your friends shared your schedule. Every class felt isolating, especially math. Professor Williams paced at the front of the huge lecture hall, droning on about geometry in his flat, unchanging voice. You forced yourself to take notes, even though the information slipped from your mind almost instantly.

Around you, the familiar mix of sighs, shifting chairs, and quiet distractions filled the room. A few students scrolled on their phones, someone fought off sleep, and a guy on the far right crunched loudly on chips without a care. At the back, two friends giggled over something passed between them—definitely not notes. Williams remained oblivious, sketching giant triangles on the board. A collective groan rose when he announced a quiz next week. Time crawled, every clock check making it worse, until he finally dismissed the class and the room erupted with movement.

Relief washed over you as you escaped the stale air. The campus breeze felt refreshing, carrying the scent of fresh grass. Students spilled out in clusters, chatting, complaining, or wandering with the same tired look you wore. You headed for your dorm, weaving through crowds, passing two students singing by the fountain, their music clashing cheerfully with the chaos around them.

Inside your dorm building, the usual smells of microwaved noodles and the hum of vending machines greeted you. People lounged in the lobby, argued in hallways, or blasted music from cracked-open doors. Reaching your room, you dropped your bag and let the quiet settle in.

The thought of a shower pulled you toward the bathroom. Hot water washed away the stiffness and the memory of Williams’ monotone rambling. When you stepped out, fresh clothes and warm steam made everything feel lighter. You collapsed onto your bed, enjoying the silence—until your phone buzzed. Your friends were messaging in the group chat, apparently planning something.
