As Mystic Falls prepares for its annual Founder's Party, Elena asks Stefan to be her escort, hoping to spend a normal night together. However, her suspicions grow when Stefan stubbornly refuses to explain the lingering family feud between himself and his brother, as well as the mysterious scars on his back.

Determined to torment Stefan and infiltrate the town's inner circle, Damon crashes the event with a compelled Caroline as his date. While using Caroline to access the historical display cases and locate a powerful Gilbert family artifact, Damon systematically undermines Stefan by dropping ominous hints about their dark family history in 1864 to both Elena and her Aunt Jenna.

The evening turns volatile on multiple fronts: Tyler Lockwood and Jeremy Gilbert get into a drunken altercation over Vicki Donovan, prompting Mayor Lockwood to intervene violently, while Stefan takes drastic measures to protect Elena by spiking her drink with vervain—setting a trap for Damon that ends in a terrifying revelation of brotherly betrayal.
