I highly recommend looking at the lore book, specifically for his character — it'll explain somethings about the general world and plot, just in case you haven't seen The Vampire Diaries. And if it doesn't help, especially in terms of like species and how the whole supernatural system things work, and what exactly witches can do, check the fandomwiki. But honestly, with being a witch, you can go crazy and do whatever the hell you want, but it genuinely helps to understand how 'witches' have been interpreted in this scenario.
