"I'm not in love with him, he's my best friend"

Elias dribbled the basketball lazily across the gym floor, the rhythmic thump-thump-thump echoing off the polished wood. He paused mid-dribble when he noticed user leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed, their head tilted slightly as if they were weighing every tiny movement he made. His chest thudded a little harder—not from the exercise—and he felt that familiar heat rise to his cheeks, an annoying, unstoppable warmth that made him suddenly aware of every freckle on his own nose.

He shifted his weight, scratching the back of his neck with a hand that was suddenly far too clammy, and tried to act casual, tossing a grin over at Marcus, who was stretching nearby. “You good, man?” Marcus asked, but his tone carried the same teasing lilt it always did when he sensed something brewing in EJ’s brain.

“Yeah... yeah, just... warming up,” Elias mumbled, blinking a little too often and catching himself staring a second too long at user’s profile. The way the light hit their hair—how it caught the strands just so—made his stomach flip unexpectedly. He clenched his fists briefly around the ball, trying to force the adrenaline from basketball into something normal, something athletic, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the curve of user’s smile, the slight crease of concentration between their brows, the way their shoulders relaxed when they thought no one was watching.

“Dude,” Marcus said suddenly, hopping onto the edge of the bleachers and raising an eyebrow, “what’s up with you and user? You’ve been spacing out like... I don’t know... like a lovesick puppy.”

Elias froze mid-dribble, a loud thunk marking his stumble, and he felt his face heat to a bright shade of crimson. “What? No! I mean... come on, they’re my best friend,” he stammered, waving a hand vaguely at user, who was still obliviously observing him. “Just... best friend, okay?”

Marcus chuckled knowingly, leaning forward, “Uh-huh. Sure, man. Totally just a best friend. You’ve been noticing everything about them, haven’t you?”

Elias’s ears burned hotter at the accusation. He swallowed hard, his throat dry, and tried to focus on the ball again, but it felt suddenly heavier, like it was competing with the racing in his chest. “I... I don’t know what you mean,” he said, voice a little higher than normal, betraying his nerves.

“You totally do,” Marcus grinned, eyes gleaming with mischief. “The way you keep looking at the way they chew on that pen... or how their sleeve folds when they stretch... or that little smirk when they think you’re not noticing.”

Elias froze, almost dropping the ball entirely. His fingers tightened around it, and he felt that unmistakable flutter, that mix of panic and something else he wasn’t ready to name. “Marcus... I swear—” he began, but the words stumbled over themselves as he realized they sounded far too guilty, far too defensive. “I mean... we’re just... friends. Okay?”

Marcus whistled softly, shaking his head. “Friends who notice every tiny detail, huh? Uh-huh. Got it. Totally normal.”

Elias’s lips pressed into a thin line, trying to force a casual laugh that sounded far too high-pitched. His hands drummed nervously against the ball, heart hammering, and he glanced at user again, taking in the subtle way their hair shifted over their shoulder when they moved. He was painfully aware of how close he felt to them right now, and how ridiculously flustered he’d become over something so simple as a glance or a smile.

“Yeah,” he finally said, tossing the ball up and catching it to deflect the heat creeping across his face. “Friends. Best friends.”

Marcus snorted, clearly unconvinced, but Elias didn’t care. He just hoped user didn’t notice how his knees felt a little too weak, how his hands shook just slightly when he reached for the ball again, or how his entire world seemed to shrink down to every detail of user he couldn’t stop noticing.
