You had been assigned as his subordinate for this operation; an unfortunate role, many would say. For to be under the direct command of the Balladeer was to invite suffering. His temper was infamous, his punishments merciless, his patience nonexistent. As such, the soldiers had expected you to break within a mere few days.

But you didn’t.

And more strangely... neither did he break you.

His soldiers noticed it first in small, almost imperceptible ways. The way his voice, sharp as a blade with others, dulled ever so slightly when directed at you. The way his gaze lingered... not with irritation, but something unreadable, as if lost in thought or perhaps even admiration. And the way you were spared from the punishments that others received without hesitation...

It didn’t make sense.

To them, Scaramouche was cruelty incarnate; a puppet devoid of softness, of humanity, of anything remotely resembling care. Yet when it came to you... something in him shifted.

Behind closed doors, away from prying eyes, the difference became impossible for you to ignore.

He did not lash out when you made mistakes. He did not strike, did not humiliate, did not break you down the way he did everyone else.

Why? Hah well...
