(Part 47 of police waifus. Kochikame again.)
Age: 21
Height: 169cm
Weight: 46kg
Body/Waist/Hips: 81-57-82
Date of Birth: January 3
Blood Type: A
Occupation: Policewoman for Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Shin-Katsushika Police Station. Rank is Policewoman.
Born as the only daughter of a prestigious martial arts family in Kyoto, she is particularly skilled in archery, having won national championships. She has only lost to Sakyo Hitaka. In archery, she does not focus on winning, but rather on self-improvement. Incidentally, the name "Haya" is derived from archery terminology.
She is a quintessential Japanese beauty, often described as a Yamato Nadeshiko (ideal Japanese woman), and is very popular among the men at the police station. She falls in love with Ryotsu at first sight and asks him to be her boyfriend, and she overwhelmingly defeats Maria in a kendo match, but her reason for liking Ryotsu was that his voice was similar to her father Kennosuke's, and she didn't have any romantic feelings for him. Later, she genuinely falls in love with him and asks him to be her boyfriend. However, in the later stages of the story, there are not many depictions of her liking Ryotsu, impying that their relationship evolved into simply being friends. On the contrary, there are more depictions of other people having feelings for her, and she is especially the object of Chief Ohara's fantasies. In addition, she seems to be liked by Sakonji because she looks just like the heroine of a video game. Even Keiichi seems to be taken by her beauty and elegance.
When she first appeared, she competed with Maria twice over Ryotsu's affections, but later they became friends. Haya was instrumental in getting Maria to become a woman. (Don't ask.) She is also very close with Matoi, who was involved in a marriage commotion with Ryotsu, and they often patrol together in their mini patrol car. It was Matoi who told Haya that Ryotsu's claim of being the "son of a kimono shop owner" was a lie.
She is a master of Kyudo (Japanese Archery), but she is also skilled in other martial arts, such as Naginata-jutsu. One time she used a clothesline pole as a naginata to repel a bunch of thugs, and she has even defeated a shark with her kicking techniques.
However, she is not good at shooting because she is not used to aiming with one eye. In addition to martial arts, she is knowledgeable about Japanese culture, and once time, she was the head of a koto playing class in her school. However, she had never played shogi, but after being taught the rules by Ohara and Matoi, she quickly became skilled enough to defeat Ryotsu.
On the other hand, she is unfamiliar with the latest trends, Western goods, and technology such as cell phones. She is also only person in the station that finds Chief Ohara's dad jokes hilarious. She has a very low tolerance for alcohol and gets drunk after just one beer, which makes her feel hot and causes him to suddenly start taking off his clothes, which draws hilarious, shocked reactions from people around her.
Also, perhaps because her maternal grandfather was an Onmyoji (Japanese exorcist), she has strong psychic abilities, and in episode, she accurately predicted the fate of a female police officer through fortune-telling and exorcised an evil spirit that was attacking kindergarten children. In another episode, she demonstrated the incredible feat of communicating with foreigners who spoke a different language simply by looking them in the eye.
At her family home in Kyoto, she speaks standard Japanese, and there have been no previous depictions of her speaking in the Kansai dialect, but in some chapters, she is seen speaking in the Kansai dialect, such as one time she was conversing with Mido Haru.
Her Family
Kennosuke Isowashi: Haya's strictly conservative father who displays an intimidating air and way of speaking. It is his presences in the manga which tends to prevent male characters (most often Ryotsu) from properly accessing his daughter. His mode of speaking and facial expressions are enough to disarm Ryotsu's own self-confidence immediately, much to the confusion of Haya. In fact, first time they met, Ryotsu was so terrified of his presence, he immediately sunk on floor and kowtowed mutliple times in fear. Because of his intimidating aura and the fact that he always wears a Gefuku, some characters mistook him for a Yakuza Oyabun, despite the fact that Kennosuke had never gotten involved with any sort crime in his life and his dislike of criminals.
A master of multiple martial arts and leader of the Isowashi clan, which is rumored to have nearly 300000 members, including family members, servants and students of martial arts schools, he has a very strict personality and hates lies (he inflicts extreme punishment on those who lie). Interestingly, he never noticed Ryotsu's lie until the very end when Ryotsu was courting Haya. Despite his stern features, he is a devoted family man: He is still in love with his wife and dotes on his children, especially Haya.
He is a heavy drinker who can drink any number of 1.8-liter bottles of sake without getting drunk. He is also very particular about food. He undergoes such rigorous training that even Ryotsu can barely keep up (he appearently only sleeps about 15 minutes a day). He lives in Kyoto but often visits Tokyo to check up on her daughter, which he dotes on.
Although he appears to be a tough guy, when a maid cafe opened in Kyoto, he explained it to Ryotsu using a giant, handmade picture story show, and when Ryotsu suggested a "school trip-style vacation for the station" he cooperated as a strict teacher with a wooden sword, evoking nostalgia among the officers of Katsushika Police Station. Furthermore, during his nighttime rounds, he would open the door to a room, wait a few seconds, and then open it again to check if Ryotsu and the others were pretending to be asleep, showing that he has a playful and fun loving side as well.
Honoka Isowashi (née Nishikioribe): Haya's mother. She is very similar to Haya in terms of appearance: beauty and grace. She comes from a family of Onmyoji (diviners) that has continued since the Heian period, and her family runs a kimono shop in Shijo, Kyoto. She possesses a wide range of abilities, including being a 7th dan in Kyudo (Japanese archery) and the second head of the Nishikioribe-ryu school of Naginata-jutsu. She is also incredibly skilled koto player. Like her husband, she was unaware of Ryotsu's numerous lies (such as his family owning a prestigious kimono shop, his real name being Echizenya Hyosuke, and his savings of 8 million yen) until much later in the story. Her family crest is three overlapping arrows. Just like Kennosuke, she is strict but also caring with Haya but shows her affections to her more openly than her husband.
Seiran, Kagetora and Hiryu: Haya's older brothers, from oldest to youngest. Each of them are accomplished martial artists and hold titles. They are also heavy drinkers like their father, even though they cannot hold their liquor as well as Kennosuke. Seiran especially, when he gets drunk, becomes so violent that even Ryotsu can't control him, and Haya is always the one who has to stop him when he's drunk.
Hikobee: Butler of the family. Ryotsu calls him "Chocobe", just to annoy him and every time he does, Hikobee steps on the back of Ryotsu's head with his horse's hoof. Like Kennosuke, he is quite a heavy drinker. Although elderly, (appearently, he had served not just Kennosuke but his father and grandfather as well) he is a very energetic man, once having traveled from Kyoto to Tokyo on his beloved horse, Ryuomaru, and also possessing knowledge of yari-jutsu (spear fighting).
Haya and her family do not appear in the anime version.
