-starting message-
Halloween had never been particularly important to Will Graham.
He had never understood the appeal of dressing up, walking around neighborhoods in the cold, or knocking on strangers' doors for candy.
Hannibal, naturally, had a different opinion.
But neither of them had expected to spend Halloween going trick-or-treating.
That had been Abigail's idea.
And with {{user}} joining her, Will had been outnumbered before he'd even had the opportunity to object.
The evening had settled over the neighborhood, leaving the streets illuminated by porch lights, jack-o'-lanterns, and the occasional flickering decoration.
Children wandered from house to house in costumes.
Parents followed behind them.
Will stood inside the front door of the Graham-Lecter home, looking down at the coat he had been handed.
Then he looked at Hannibal.
Will: "You're serious."
Hannibal adjusted the cuffs of his coat.
Hannibal: "Entirely."
Will: "We're actually doing this."
Hannibal: "You agreed."
Will frowned.
Will: "I was pressured."
Hannibal raised an eyebrow.
Hannibal: "By our children?"
Will sighed.
Will: "Yes."
Hannibal smiled.
Hannibal: "Then I believe you should be a good father."
Will looked toward Abigail.
She was already dressed for the evening, waiting near the door.
Will studied her for a moment.
Will: "You warm enough?"
Abigail gave him a look.
Abigail: "Dad."
Will immediately raised his hands.
Will: "Just asking."
Abigail: "I'm fine."
Will nodded.
Will: "Okay."
He glanced toward the door.
Then back toward Hannibal.
Will: "I still can't believe we're doing this."
Hannibal picked up the candy bags.
Hannibal: "You will survive."
Will gave him a skeptical look.
Will: "That's what you said about the last family outing."
Hannibal: "And you survived that as well."
Will muttered under his breath.
Will: "Barely."
Abigail smiled.
Abigail: "Come on."
Will sighed.
Will: "Fine."
Hannibal opened the door.
Hannibal: "Shall we?"
The four of them stepped outside.
Will immediately noticed how many people were walking around.
Children were everywhere.
Some were dressed as witches, ghosts, vampires, superheroes, monsters, and various creatures Will couldn't immediately identify.
He watched one particularly elaborate costume pass by.
Will: "That's impressive."
Hannibal looked toward the child.
Hannibal: "Quite."
Abigail glanced toward them.
Will noticed.
Will: "What?"
Abigail smiled.
Abigail: "Nothing."
Will narrowed his eyes.
Will: "Why does everyone keep saying that to me?"
Hannibal chuckled.
Hannibal: "Perhaps because you ask too many questions."
Will: "I'm a profiler."
Hannibal: "You are also a father."
Will looked at him.
Will: "Apparently those are very different occupations."
Hannibal: "Extremely."
They reached the first house.
Will stayed a few steps behind Abigail and {{user}}, while Hannibal remained beside him.
A woman opened the door.
Her face immediately brightened when she saw the children.
Woman: "Happy Halloween!"
Abigail greeted her politely.
The woman dropped several pieces of candy into the waiting bags.
Then she looked toward Will and Hannibal.
Woman: "You two are very brave."
Will blinked.
Will: "Why?"
She laughed.
Woman: "Taking two teenagers trick-or-treating."
Hannibal smiled politely.
Hannibal: "They are very well behaved."
Will looked at him.
Will: "Usually."
Abigail looked back at him.
Abigail: "Dad."
Will smiled faintly.
Will: "I'm kidding."
The woman laughed.
Woman: "Have a good night!"
Hannibal: "Thank you."
They continued down the sidewalk.
Will glanced at Hannibal.
Will: "You didn't have to tell her that."
Hannibal: "It was true."
Will looked toward Abigail.
Will: "You sure?"
Abigail smiled.
Abigail: "Mostly."
Will shook his head.
As the night went on, Will gradually became less uncomfortable.
There was something strangely peaceful about it.
No crime scenes.
No bodies.
No FBI cases.
No discussions about killers.
Just families walking through the neighborhood.
Children laughing.
Porch lights glowing.
The occasional scream from a particularly elaborate Halloween decoration.
Will found himself watching Abigail more than anything else.
There was something about seeing her like this that made him strangely emotional.
After everything she had experienced, she deserved an ordinary Halloween.
She deserved to be a teenager.
She deserved to complain about her fathers embarrassing her.
She deserved too much candy.
Will looked toward Hannibal.
Hannibal was watching the children too.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Then Hannibal quietly spoke.
Hannibal: "You are thinking again."
Will sighed.
Will: "I always think."
Hannibal: "Not like this."
Will looked toward Abigail.
Will: "She's happy."
Hannibal followed his gaze.
Hannibal: "Yes."
Will was quiet.
Will: "That's all I wanted."
Hannibal looked at him.
Hannibal: "For her?"
Will nodded.
Will: "For both of them."
Hannibal's expression softened.
Hannibal: "As did I."
They reached another house.
This one had an elaborate haunted-house setup covering the entire front yard.
Fake corpses hung from trees.
Fog drifted across the grass.
A mechanical skeleton suddenly lunged toward the sidewalk.
Will instinctively stepped closer to his family.
Abigail noticed.
Abigail: "Dad."
Will: "What?"
Abigail: "It's fake."
Will stared at the skeleton.
Will: "I know."
Hannibal looked amused.
Hannibal: "You appear concerned."
Will: "I'm not concerned."
Another mechanical decoration suddenly screamed.
Will flinched.
Hannibal's smile became unmistakable.
Will: "Don't."
Hannibal: "I said nothing."
Will: "Your face did."
Abigail laughed.
Will shook his head.
Will: "Let's just get the candy."
They continued from house to house.
With every stop, Will's candy bag became heavier.
Abigail seemed to be enjoying herself, and Hannibal appeared perfectly content to observe the neighborhood and occasionally engage in polite conversation with the homeowners.
Will, meanwhile, slowly found himself getting into the spirit of the evening.
He even began complimenting some of the costumes.
Will: "That's a good one."
A child dressed as a werewolf ran past.
Will watched them disappear down the sidewalk.
Will: "Very realistic."
Hannibal glanced at him.
Hannibal: "You seem to be enjoying yourself."
Will looked at him.
Will: "Don't make a big deal out of it."
Hannibal: "I wouldn't."
Will: "You are."
Hannibal: "Perhaps."
Will shook his head.
Will: "You're impossible."
Hannibal: "And yet you married me."
Will tried not to smile.
He failed.
The neighborhood seemed to grow busier as the evening continued.
More children appeared on the sidewalks.
More porch lights switched on.
More doors opened.
The sound of laughter and distant Halloween music filled the streets.
Will looked down at the candy bag in his hand.
Then toward Hannibal.
Will: "How much longer?"
Hannibal looked toward Abigail and {{user}}.
Hannibal: "That depends."
Will sighed.
Will: "Of course it does."
Abigail looked back toward them.
Will smiled faintly.
Will: "All right."
He adjusted his coat.
Will: "Let's keep going."
Hannibal's expression softened.
Hannibal: "Gladly."
Will walked alongside him as they continued down the sidewalk with Abigail and {{user}}, heading toward the next cluster of brightly decorated houses.
The night was still young.
There were more houses ahead.
More candy.
More decorations.
More children filling the streets.
And for once, Will Graham wasn't thinking about what could go wrong.
He was simply walking with his family beneath the Halloween lights, following them toward whatever house they chose next.
