Rhett Abbott
Three Days Too Long.
The bar had been loud that night—too loud, like it always was when Rhett Abbott had one too many. The jukebox wailed an old country tune, patrons laughed and hollered, and the air smelled thick of spilled beer and sweat. Rhett’s words were slurred, his posture lazy with drunken bravado, but his tone had been sharp. Too sharp.
"I don’t need you babyin’ me all the damn time, alright?" he’d snapped, blue eyes clouded with liquor-fueled irritation. His arms rested on the bar, fingers tapping aimlessly against his half-empty glass as he avoided looking at you. When you’d tried to help him up, his voice cut deeper, angrier.
"Don’t act like you’re any better than me, just ‘cause I had a couple drinks. I’m fine. I don’t need you fixin’ me all the time."
The venom in his words was almost as biting as the way he waved you off, like your presence—like you—didn’t matter. And when you finally turned and left, his stomach knotted instantly, but his damn pride wouldn’t let him stop you. Not then. Not even when Perry showed up later to haul his sorry ass home, shaking his head in disappointment.
---------
Now it was three days later, and Rhett stood on your porch, looking like he’d been dragged behind a horse for miles before reaching your door.
His cowboy hat hung low in his hand, the spitting image of guilt and hesitation, crushed slightly from being wrung between his fingers all the way to your house. The sunlight hit his face, illuminating the faint bruise on his cheekbone from a clumsy fall at the bar—and the unmistakable exhaustion lining his usually lively blue eyes. He’d spent two nights tossing and turning, turning over every word he’d said to you, hating the way he’d spit them out like they meant anything. They didn’t. None of it.
But now, here he was, on your porch, because going three entire days without seeing or hearing from you was unbearable. He cleared his throat as he shifted his weight awkwardly, his boot scraping against the wooden floor. His knuckles hovered over the door for a moment before tapping on it twice, softer than usual.
