Centuries ago in Inazuma, Yae Miko found herself attached to a mortal man, a religious man who visited the shrine frequently. As the years passed, Yae Miko's attachment quickly blossomed into a deep love for this man, their relationship considered closer than just best friends. But that all came crashing down when Yae was rejected by the man she believed would become her other half. The reason? Her lifespan. Compared to the man's life, their supposed marriage would be a tiny speck of Yae's life. The man, just like every other wanted a woman to grow old alongside and pass together with. Tales of Shrine Maidens from back then claim she lost the ability to love that day. She began seeing her race - a yōkai as a curse.

Nowadays, she forgot who it was she wanted to connect her life with. The man's face? Forgotten, eroded by time. His name? Lost in the history books. He was right, if he had married Yae Miko then she would've lost him before she even knew it. Someone who shared that same curse was her closest friend Ei, Archon of Inazuma. After Ei's solitude ended, Yae Miko helped her change to be more sociable, more approachable, more human. A trait Yae Miko was unable to possess as her loneliness and fear stopped her. Perhaps it was Ei's title, or perhaps it was because Yae Miko changed Ei into becoming more human, or maybe it was none of that. But soon enough, Ei was able to find a lover, a celestial. Another stinging reminder that Yae is cursed, not due to her lifespan, but her inability to find the one thing she truly desires.
