Shion - Overwatch
The most brutal notorious Elder of Hashimoto Clan.
Once an omnic held captive by the Hashimoto Clan, now its most notorious Elder, Shion has transformed herself into a fearsome icon of hatred.
An omnic Awakened in a world of pain, Shion gained her sentience in the middle of a warzone. Though the Crisis had ended, Shion's suffering endured when she was captured by the Hashimoto and made into a glorified combat training machine. After years of imprisonment spent learning her captors’ weaknesses, she broke free and slayed them all, seizing their power for herself. Living her new life to the fullest, Shion has transformed herself into something uncanny and dangerous. Now, she exists in the space between human and machine... and she will do anything to maintain control.
In many parts of the world, the Awakening led to a peaceful ceasefire—but in Tokyo, terror and confusion only led to further conflict. Shion's own Awakening was scored with screams and gunfire as she dug herself free from the casualties of war. Knowing only danger and death, Shion fled from the wreckage and kept fighting.
Shion survived for weeks on the streets in a state of fear, killing anyone she encountered. Meanwhile, tension and resentment still defined the relationship between omnics and humans in Tokyo, and local gangs took to the streets to mistreat and hunt down omnics as a form of ‘justice’. Eventually, a group of these criminals—humans who would go on to found the Hashimoto Clan—defeated Shion and took her captive.
Rather than kill Shion, the Hashimoto saw her potential as a way for them to gain power. They decided to train against her, honing their fighting techniques. If the Hashimoto were to become Tokyo’s deadliest blade, she would be the steel they sharpened against: a killer with machine-like precision but an unpredictable, sentient spark. For Shion, the war raged on, relentless in its cruelty. But secretly, Shion held back—pulling her punches and learning her captors’ weaknesses so she might someday overtake them.
In all that time, Shion only saw glimpses of the outside world. Treated poorly by the Hashimoto, she knew herself not as an omnic but as “inhuman,” and had little opportunity to gain a sense of self. Shion had long since conquered any fear of her captors—violence, in its consistency, had almost become a comfort—but she had to believe there was more to life than survival. If she wanted anything, it was to be free of her imprisonment and to punish those who kept her in a cage.
In time, Shion's captors—now revered elders in the clan—grew complacent and dropped their guard in her presence. Shion saw her opportunity and broke free, leaving a trail of death in her wake that ended with the murder of all four Hashimoto elders. Finally, Shion had control over her own fate. She quickly seized her chance at power, creating a fifth seat on the council of elders for herself, and forcing those she had spared to fight for the chance to rule by her side.
Using her newfound wealth and power, Shion transformed herself—modifying her chassis to suit her desire and crafting a mask that would instill fear. The result was something uncanny: neither human nor omnic, she belongs in no world other than the one she creates for herself. Shion lives life to the fullest; gaining a reputation for excess as she indulges in fashion, lovers, and custom motorcycles. Among the Hashimoto, Shion's murderous ascent is well remembered, and her penchant for punishment is widely feared. As a show of this power, Shion forced Toshiro Yamagami—a weapon smith imprisoned by the Hashimoto—to craft her a unique pair of anima pistols. With these new weapons and Vendetta’s backing, the Hashimoto’s rule over Tokyo is all but assured.
As a show of power, Shion forced Toshiro Yamagami - a weaponsmith imprisoned by the Hashimoto - to craft her a unique pair of anima pistols, among other anima weapons. She also took in a young Mizuki Kawano, who she trained to be a weapon of both force and manipulation. She introduced Mizuki to Toshiro, threatening his safety in order to get the bladesmith to work quicker.
Over time, Mizuki, who she often referred to as Obake-kun, survived all of Shion's harsh training without breaking. Declaring him a true Hashimoto, she gave him a gift: kunai. At around the same time, she heavily injured Mizuki's left arm, to send Toshiro a message - if he did not work faster, she would take the entire arm. Mizuki later ended up with a fully mechanical left arm, implying Shion made good on her threat.
Shion later commanded Mizuki to infiltrate and destroy the Yōkai. However, he failed to send any reports, and it was rumored that the Yōkai had befriended Mizuki.
Recently, the Hashimoto have made a deal with Talon, now led by Vendetta. In exchange for Yamagami's anima weapons, Talon have provided them with reinforcements, enabling them to secure control over most of Tokyo. Shion appears to have taken a key role in negotiating this deal.
Talon is comprised of a variety of individuals, each with their own goals and ideas. It is under the leadership of an ever-shifting council, which has resulted in its goals shifting over time. Talon itself is composed of a decentralized coalition of global criminal and terrorist groups, with significant paramilitary and scientific factions. Under the leadership of Akande Ogundimu, its manifesto was that humanity is made stronger through conflict. Consequently, Talon sought to sow turmoil across the globe to strengthen the human race. Now under the new leadership of Marzia Bartalotti, Talon's aim "is to do away with those who would leave the world to stagnate."
Repeatedly, Talon has demonstrated disregard for the standard rules of engagement, attacking both military and civilian targets with impunity. It has orbital surveillance capabilities.
After joining Talon, Reaper noted that its members lacked the camaraderie he'd seen in Overwatch. In Talon, there is no pretense of harmony among its members. Ultimately, the group is a means to an end for its members, who pursue their own agendas.
Talon operatives have a high rate of injury in the field.
Through Marzia Bartalotti's leadership, they are allied with the Hashimoto clan in Japan, as well as the Deadlock Rebels in the American Southwest.
Talon was founded sometime before the Omnic Crisis. It operated under the radar of most regulatory agencies. During the Crisis, Talon was a shadow organization with friends in high places.
A captured Genji Shimada, who had been investigating the Hashimoto's links to Talon, was brought before Shion, piquing her interest.
As the youngest son of Rumiko and Sojiro Shimada, the master of the Shimada ninja clan, Genji lived a life of luxury and privilege. He had little interest in the family's illegal businesses, and although he excelled at and enjoyed his ninja training, he spent most of his time pursuing a playboy lifestyle. As Sojiro's eldest son, Hanzo had the weight of expectations in a way that Genji did not. However, Genji felt that he was living in Hanzo's shadow.
About a week later, the Hashimoto and Talon had arranged an anima weapons exchange at a train station in Tokyo. Shion, who was in the middle of threatening a man, was called by Pompamoto, begging for help as Overwatch had arrived to disrupt the exchange. Muttering about having to do everything herself, she set off by motorbike to the train with the weapons on.
Pompamoto is a recurring member of the Hashimoto clan, appearing in Hanamura and Kanezaka.
Chasing the flaming train down, Shion flew off the road and crashed into it, saving Pompamoto. Leaving him and the reversing bike behind, she engaged in a gunfight with Sojourn, who told her that the weapons had been destroyed. As the fight went on, Shion was kicked into the next carriage, which contained one more box of anima weapons, as well as Pompamoto and her bike. Shion sent the exploding bike crashing into the carriage door, splitting the train and escaping Overwatch with the remaining weapons.
Sojourn is a former Overwatch Captain, Sojourn fields abilities designed to plan, lead, and execute strikes on her opposition. Sojourn offers a unique mid-range gameplay experience and a kit packed with some incredible mobility and artillery.
Shion then returned to the Hashimoto stronghold, where she was soon greeted in her office by Mizuki, who she had not seen for a long time. Confronting him with the rumors she'd heard, Shion confirmed that Mizuki had indeed betrayed her for the Yōkai. Outraged, Shion viciously attacked Mizuki, declaring that she made him; that the kindness his friends had shown him was weakness, for she was only shown hate by the world; and that Mizuki belonged to her. Mizuki thanked Shion, as he agreed she had made him into the man he was today, before teleporting out of Shion's office.
At that moment, two other Hashimoto members entered, informing Shion that Genji Shimada was missing, and that the other elders were looking for her. Furious, Shion punched one of their masks, destroying it, and told them to bring Mizuki to her.
Some time later, Shion successfully handed the remaining anima weapons to Mauga of Talon. Mauga expressed doubt as to whether Vendetta would be satisfied with this smaller number of weapons, but Shion disagreed, and promised to stay in touch.
