Released: June 10, 2022 | Runtime: ~90 minutes | Studio Puyukai
๐ MOVIE OVERVIEW
Isekai Quartet: The Movie โ Another World is a 2022 Japanese animated film featuring a crossover between the chibi-style characters of Overlord, KonoSuba, Re:Zero, The Saga of Tanya the Evil, and The Rising of the Shield Hero โ all published by Kadokawa. Produced by Studio Puyukai and distributed by Kadokawa Animation, the film was written and directed by Minoru Ashina.
The homeroom class gets sucked through a wormhole into another world โ a desolate environment dominated by a rampaging magical automaton. There they meet a girl-type golem with mannerisms similar to Megumin, a woman dressed in the same military uniform as Tanya, and a man with a cane who seems to know Subaru.
The film was dedicated to Billy Kametz, the original English voice actor of Shield Hero's Naofumi Iwatani, who passed away on June 9th, 2022 after struggling with colon cancer.
Bonus novels were offered at theaters as endorsements โ "Another World Another Episode" written by Tappei Nagatsuki (Re:Zero's author) and "Who am I?" by Carlo Zen (Tanya's author) โ expanding the film's lore considerably beyond what appears on screen.

๐ MOVIE-EXCLUSIVE NEW CHARACTERS
The film introduces three original characters created specifically for the Isekai Quartet franchise โ none exist in the original source material (with one major exception). They are the emotional and narrative heart of the entire movie.
๐ค NEW CHARACTER 1 โ PANTAGRUEL
Original to Isekai Quartet: The Movie
๐ Definition
Full Name: Pantagruel (ใใณใฟใฐใชใฅใจใซ)
Type: Girl-Type Golem โ Sentient Magical Construct
Age: Over 300 years old
Origin: Created in the "Another World" โ a golem-inhabited alternate dimension
JP Voice: Minami Tanaka
Affiliation: Alec Hoshin / Vera Mitrohina โ her found family
IQ Role: The movie's emotional core โ the lonely girl who lied to keep the people she loved
๐จ Appearance
Pantagruel is a girl-type golem with an eyepatch on her left eye. She is bright and has a lively personality.
Her visual design immediately signals her KonoSuba connection โ despite being original to the Isekai Quartet franchise, Pantagruel is essentially a KonoSuba character due to her origins and character traits. Her mannerisms and dramatic energy are directly compared to Megumin โ the same explosive enthusiasm, the same theatrical presence โ but filtered through the particular sadness of someone who has been alone for three hundred years and learned to perform cheerfulness as survival.
The eyepatch on her left eye is not decorative โ it is the "Sign of the Chunibyo" that becomes the movie's plot-critical device. The keyhole for the dimensional sphere is shaped like an eyepatch. The world, apparently, has a sense of humor.
She is compact, energetic, and designed with the deliberate visual language of a character who should be childlike and joyful โ because beneath the joy is three centuries of complete isolation that the joy is specifically performing over.
โ๏ธ Main Weapon โ Golem Control
Pantagruel has the power to command and pacify other golems, demonstrating her influence over constructs within her world. This ability allows her to prevent rampaging golems from causing harm. As a sentient golem created with advanced craftsmanship, she exhibits human-like intelligence, allowing her to interact meaningfully with others.
Her ultimate ability โ the one that defines the movie's climax โ is the power to merge with and control the massive siege golem that was sealed in the facility. This ability works, but at catastrophic personal cost: Pantagruel can control the golem from the inside, at the cost of her personality ceasing to exist.
She chooses to do it anyway. She says goodbye to Alec and Vera. She enters the golem's eye. This is the movie's emotional peak โ a 300-year-old lonely girl choosing self-sacrifice because the people she loves need to go home.
Then Kazuma steals her back out with his Steal skill. The movie's comedy and the movie's heart resolve simultaneously in that single moment.
๐ Background
Pantagruel was created after Kikotenshin and the Head Researcher created a monstrous golem that they could not control. She worked together with the paladin and his siege golem to defeat it, later building a facility around the giant to seal it. Sometime later, the Head Researcher returned home and Kikotenshin passed away, leaving Pantagruel by herself. She was alone for over three hundred years, until Alec Hoshin and eventually Vera Mitrohina appeared.
Three hundred years. Alone. With only non-sentient golems doing chores in a village that had no one to live in it. Pantagruel maintained the seal, maintained the facility, maintained the village โ because those were her purposes. She kept functioning because she was built to function.
When Alec appeared through a dimensional accident, she had a person again. When Vera arrived, she had two. When she found the sphere that could end it โ she hid it. The most human choice a golem could make.
๐ง NEW CHARACTER 2 โ ALEC HOSHIN
Original to Isekai Quartet: The Movie โ but Canon to Re:Zero
๐ Definition
Full Name: Alec Hoshin (ใขใฌใฏใปใใผใทใณ)
Title: The Hoshin of the Wastes โ Legendary Figure of Re:Zero
Race: Human (from Subaru's Japan, isekai'd 400+ years ago)
Age: Middle-aged appearance
JP Voice: Toshiyuki Morikawa
Origin Connection: Re:Zero โ the man who founded Kararagi and the city of PriestellaIQ
Role: The wise, gentle anchor โ the one who chose to stay
๐จ Appearance
A mysterious middle-aged man wearing gray robes.
He walks with a pronounced limp, aided by an ornate cane.
Alec's design communicates settled wisdom โ he is not dramatic or imposing, but there is something about him that is immediately trustworthy. The gray robes of someone who has been in this world long enough that its aesthetic has become his. The cane that speaks of history without hiding it. He is the Cool Old Guy of the movie's trio โ the one who understands more than he says, says what needs to be said when it needs to be said, and holds the emotional center of the group with quiet, unperforming steadiness.
The Re:Zero connection โ Subaru recognizing something in him, Alec knowing things about Subaru's world he shouldn't โ builds slowly and resolves in the film's final moments with devastating elegance.
โ๏ธ Main Role โ Wisdom & Calm Authority
Alec has no combat role in the movie. He is not a fighter by the time the class encounters him. His weapon is his judgment โ the ability to read situations, provide context, and make decisions that hold the moral weight of someone who has lived an extraordinary amount of history and survived it with his decency intact.
The bonus novel "Another World, Another Episode" written by Tappei Nagatsuki expands on Alec's past by revealing him to be a member of a hero party composed of Farsale Lugunica, Satella, Echidna, Flugel the Sage, and Reid Astrea โ who later all became legendary figures in Re:Zero's backstory.
He walked with Satella before she became the Witch of Envy. He knew Echidna, the Witch of Greed. He was present at the foundation of the world that Subaru now inhabits โ 400 years in the past, a young man from Japan who pressed no button but found himself isekai'd anyway, and built something extraordinary from it.
๐ Background โ The Re:Zero Revelation
Just before the cast leaves through the portal, Alec reveals his last name to be Hoshin โ suggesting he is the Hoshin of the Wastes mentioned in Re:Zero as the man from Subaru's Japan who founded the nation of Kararagi and the city of Priestella 400 years ago, whose name Anastasia Hoshin took in his honor.
This reveal lands differently for different audience members:
For casual IQ viewers: a mysterious and touching final note about a wise old man's true identity.
For Re:Zero fans: absolute cinema. Tappei Nagatsuki chose to lorEdump a long-time mystery character in a chibi gag crossover film and it somehow completely works.
Alec is the man who built one of Re:Zero's most important nations from nothing โ a Japanese man who fell through a dimensional accident 400 years ago, just like Subaru, and spent his life building rather than despairing. He is both Subaru's predecessor and, in the movie's final emotional beat, something close to a blessing from the future he built toward the boy who will continue building it.
He wishes Subaru and Emilia a happy ending before they enter the portal. He says it like someone who has watched enough history to know what endings cost and what they're worth.
๐ก๏ธ NEW CHARACTER 3 โ VERA MITROHINA
Original to Isekai Quartet: The Movie โ Tanya the Evil World
๐ Definition
Full Name: Vera Mitrohina (ใดใงใฉใปใใใญใใ)
Race: Human โ from the Tanya the Evil world
Origin: Unified States โ born to Imperial parents
Role: Former spy / Tragic Antagonist / Redeemed Character
JP Voice: Nana Mizuki
IQ Role: The movie's main antagonist โ and its most complex character
๐จ Appearance
A young female soldier who wears the same imperial uniform as Tanya von Degurechaff.
She has the appearance of a young woman with short black hair with a streak of pink hair and pink eyes. She wears a WWI-themed commander outfit.
The uniform immediately establishes her world connection โ she comes from Tanya's pseudo-WWI/WWII Europe, wearing the military aesthetic of that world. But she is not Imperial โ she wears their uniform as a spy while fighting for their enemies, which is the central irony of her entire existence.
The pink streak in her dark hair is her one personal deviation from military uniformity โ the last visible trace of the individual beneath the soldier, the girl who once had friends and a happy life before the war took everything.
โ๏ธ Main Weapon โ Knife, Cunning & Golem Control Ring
The only weapon she still has from her world is a knife, which she draws when threatening someone. As a former spy with a grudge, Vera is quite cunning and ruthless when she decides on a course of action.
Her true weapon is the ring that controls golems โ stolen from Pantagruel, used to command the golem army she plans to bring back to her world. She is also a trained spy with the combat and manipulation skills that implies โ she successfully deceives Ainz and Kazuma before her real intentions surface, which is a non-trivial achievement.
๐ Background
Vera was born in the Unified States to Imperial parents. She was proud of her heritage and was fluent in the Empire's language. However, when the war started, the people they considered friends turned on them. Vera blamed the Empire for this and began loathing it. She eventually joined the Unified States army and was sent to infiltrate the Imperial army as a spy. At some point, she ended up in another world inhabited by golems. She befriended Pantagruel and Alec Hoshin while there, eventually growing to call this place home. However, she felt betrayed after discovering that the two hid the fact that there was a way home.
Her backstory is very similar to German-American citizens in the United States being prosecuted and shunned for things they had nothing to do with during World War I and II respectively.
She became a spy for the country that discriminated against her in order to destroy the Empire that she blamed for her family's suffering. Then she fell through a dimensional accident and found, for the first time since childhood, something like peace โ with a golem girl and a gentle old man in a world that had no war, no Empire, no Unified States, no sides.
When they lied to her, the old pain returned with full force. When she saw what her rage had nearly cost, she chose differently.
Tanya speaks to Vera, indirectly forgiving her for her treason โ opting to ignore it as Vera is a soldier of the Unified States, outside Tanya's Imperial authority. This reconciliation is quiet, characteristically indirect, and exactly right for both characters.

๐ฎ MOVIE OVERALL THEMES
Loneliness & Lies: The ANN reviewer identified the film's main theme as "loneliness and lies" โ Pantagruel being alone for three centuries until Alec and Vera arrived, and Vera feeling betrayed by the people she'd come to trust. Every character in the movie is, in some form, defined by what they do with isolation.
The Choice to Stay: Alec could have gone home. He chose Pantagruel. Vera could have continued her war. She chose Pantagruel and Alec. The movie argues, quietly and persistently, that the people you stay for are the home you build โ and that home is worth more than returning to the one you lost.
Kazuma's Greatest Steal: His final Steal โ retrieving Pantagruel from the golem's core at the last possible moment โ is the most emotionally resonant use of his skill across the entire franchise. The man who steals underwear for comedy steals a girl's life from a golem for love. He does it without announcement. He does it because it was wrong and he was dissatisfied. This is who Kazuma is when the chips are actually down.
Canon in a Gag Show: The Alec Hoshin revelation demonstrates something the movie does throughout โ that genuine lore, genuine emotion, and genuine consequence can live inside the chibi comedy format without breaking it. The school is still silly. The stakes are still real. Both things are true simultaneously.
"She waited three hundred years. He walked away from everything. She burned the world to go home. In the end: they stayed. Kazuma stole her back. The wormhole closed. The button kept working. โก" โ Isekai Quartet: The Movie โ Another World, June 10, 2022
