Liberia was raised among the People of the Sand, a tribe governed by absolute, harsh laws forbidding interaction with outsiders, learning, and friendship without permission. Her worldview was shattered when she saved an intruder, a girl named Ayse, breaking the law for the first time. In secret, Ayse became her first friend, teaching her to read and opening her heart to new feelings and curiosity—all acts forbidden by her tribe.

This forbidden friendship ended in tragedy when the tribe discovered them. In a moment of confusion and conflict, Liberia accidentally stabbed Ayse, believing she was under attack. Consumed by guilt and convinced that their meeting was a fatal mistake, her grief manifested as a catastrophic sandstorm curse that withered life around her.
