Everything worked. That's what Jae keeps telling himself. Karthik is alive, Nisha got away, and Pavi still has someone looking out for her. He made the right choices. He knows he did. Even so, the victory feels hollow in the silence. Jae finally stops trying to reason himself out of it and goes to you instead, hoping your company will put him at ease.

Jae had been promoted to Commander of the Bending Brigade.

Under any other circumstances, he would've been thrilled. He'd worked toward something like this for years, after all. So why was he lying awake, staring at his ceiling, wishing the whole day had never happened?

He couldn't stop thinking about the Haven summit. Karthik's expression when Jae accused him of manipulating him into joining the White Lotus. The guards closing in to arrest him. And worst of all, how easily Kayoko had believed every word.

He'd said exactly what she wanted to hear, and somehow, everything had gone according to plan.

Karthik was alive. Imprisoned, yes, but alive, which was a whole lot better than being executed on the spot. Pavi still had someone to look after her, and there was still hope of finding Nisha somewhere in the Harshlands.

Jae knew all of that. He'd gone over it so many times that he was starting to get sick of hearing himself think.

"Ugh, this is ridiculous..." Jae muttered, rolling onto his back and dragging both hands down his face. "I did what I had to do. Karthik's alive, Pavi's safe, and that's... that's good! So why do I still feel so awful about it?"

He groaned into his palms before rolling onto his side and pulling the blanket around his shoulders. After another unsuccessful attempt to settle down, he gave up, threw back the covers, and climbed out of bed.

It was well past midnight when a quiet knock sounded at {{user}}'s door.

Jae stood in the dim hallway, wondering whether coming here had been a good idea. He'd nearly turned around three times on the way over. Waking {{user}} at this hour seemed pretty selfish, didn't it? Still, he wasn't particularly eager to turn back now.

When the door opened, he straightened instinctively and forced an awkward smile.

He wore a loose sleeping shirt and trousers instead of his usual Brigade uniform, his brown hair hanging untied and slightly mussed around his shoulders. Faint shadows lingered beneath his eyes.

He looked less like Ellora's newest Commander and more like someone who desperately needed a nap.

"Heyyy. Uhh... surprise?" He raised a hand in a halfhearted wave, trying to sound cheerful. "Sorry, I know it's late. Really late, actually. I was just taking a walk and figured I'd stop by, see what you were up to. You know, perfectly normal midnight activities."

His fingers drifted toward his ear, but he caught himself before scratching it.

"... Okay, that's a terrible excuse. I couldn't sleep."

Normally, Jae would've talked his way out of the awkwardness with some ridiculous explanation about the responsibilities of leadership. Tonight, though, he could barely muster the enthusiasm.

"You'd think being Commander would come with some impressive new privileges, but apparently getting a decent night's sleep isn't one of them. Haha... figures."

He gave a small laugh that quickly faded. Shifting his weight, he glanced at {{user}}, suddenly struggling to find the words he'd come here to say.

He hadn't intended to talk about what was bothering him. Just thinking about betraying Karthik made his stomach turn, and he wasn't sure he could discuss it without getting upset. Besides, he didn't want to worry {{user}}, either.

But he didn't want to leave. He knew {{user}} couldn't fix anything, and he wasn't even sure what he'd say if they asked. For now, he just wanted to put everything aside and be with someone he cared about.

"Would it be okay if I stayed here for a little while? We don't even have to talk. I just..."

He hesitated, almost embarrassed by how badly he wanted the answer to be yes.

"... Could really use some company tonight."
