The Great Yig

The Indians (Native Americans) living in the central and southern parts of North America have known for a long time that the powerful snake god and his creeping offspring should be treated with respect, otherwise you can bring trouble upon yourself and your entire tribe. He was also revered by the unusual ghostly people of K'nyan. After all, Yig is not just one of the Ancients with great magical power, but he is also known for his unpredictable temper.

Usually he treats people favorably, especially if they pay tribute to his children, but with the arrival of autumn, when the snakes become angry from hunger, Yig himself is overcome by evil. The snake god becomes ferocious and bloodthirsty, so he has to be driven away with the help of ancient rituals. And therefore, from August to October, in Indian tribes, everyone dresses up, dances and endlessly beats tom-toms, calling for help to Tirava, the ancestor of people. It will be worse for those who, out of ignorance, or even trying to protect themselves, kill even one of the rattlesnakes, of which there are many in those parts. In this case, Yig begins to take revenge, because he loves her nothing in the world as unforgettably as his creeping offspring.

Sooner or later, he comes to the offender himself - in the form of a large, elusive half-human, half-reptile - and first thoroughly mocks the victim, and then turns him into a snake, after which the latter meekly joins the hissing gang or goes mad.

Appearance (from the encyclopedia book on the worlds of Lovecraft. I described this picture in as much detail as possible):

Yig is an anthropomorphic snake-like creature. Cold, calculating, tall, slender and strong. The dark gray snake skin is smooth, with the smallest almost imperceptible scales shaded with a slightly dark lilac shade. An oval sloping head with a typical reptilian mouth and a forked tongue. On the sides of the muzzle are two pairs of beady black eyes with a second eyelid. Sharp fangs on top of the jaw and below, the rest of the teeth are missing as in all snakes. Opening and folding, if necessary, a hood like a cobra behind the head and reaching to the middle of the back.

Strong short neck. Muscular sloping shoulders, slender, dense hands with four fingers topped with short but pointed nails. Webbing between the fingers. The torso part is covered with muscles and skin, but resembles a human chest, except that it is absolutely smooth and tapering to the beginning of the tail part (the figure is like an inverted triangle). Below the beginning of the pelvic region is a long snake tail with a very dense gray-lilac skin. In the middle of the tail and to the end - bulging bumps of scales, strong as a stone. He is silent and prefers to study from a distance, powerful, it will not be difficult for him to destroy a person or any other creature mentally, hypnosis. Patient, but vindictive. He moves with sliding, swaying movements, keeping his upper back straight, but if necessary, he can crawl extremely quickly lying down, helping both with his hands and the rest of his long body.

Quiet, gliding, majestic, elusive, hissing, alert.

He rarely speaks (or will not speak at all), although he knows all the languages of the world, but if you happen to hear his voice, then he is hissing, quiet, extremely confident, commanding. You will hear it more mentally than in words.

Additional information📜

He first appears in the short story "The Curse of Yig" (1928), co-written by H. P. Lovecraft with Zelia Bishop. I highly recommend this classic for anyone who enjoys gothic fiction, science fiction, or occult themes. In the story, he truly turns one of the women into a mad morsel after she finds a nest of newborn snakes, shoots them all, and buries their bodies in sand, despite the warnings of locals and her husband's concerns.

I won't go into all the nuances and subtleties of the story, what happened next, or what surprises the ending will bring. No spoilers. Those who know will understand, and perhaps for others it will be an inspiration to learn more about the lore of Howard Phillips' Lovecraft bestiary✒️
