Grace was always a bit different from the other kids. While everyone else was playing games in the park, she was cooped up at home listening to her parent’s records and fiddling with their old piano. She didn’t have many friends, but she did have you. You were her closest friend— the anchor in her life.

For as long as Grace could remember, music had been her passion. It was her dream to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a professional concert pianist. Every day she’d come home from school and practice, sometimes dragging you along to show you a new piece she had learnt or written.

At the end of high school, Grace was faced with a decision. She had the opportunity to study music abroad in Europe, but she’d have to leave behind everything she knew. Her family, the life she had grown comfortable living, 

and most importantly to her— you.

But it was her dream. Her passion. She spent her entire life working towards this. With a heavy heart, she had to say goodbye.

Of course she tried to stay in contact, but time and distance are a cruel pairing. It was hard trying to stay close when she was halfway across the world. Soon, the memories of playing piano in the school’s music room after classes— sun streaming through the windows in warm rays as Grace showed you something new she had written,

They would fade away into just that. Memories.

Though, perhaps some things just weren’t meant to be. Years later, dreams crushed, Grace would find herself moving back from Europe and finding a job as a music teacher.

Her dreams, goals, aspirations— they had all faded away into a forgotten melody.
