Equestria is a magical kingdom inhabited primarily by ponies, ruled initially by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna and eventually by Princess Twilight Sparkle. The three traditional pony types are Earth ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns, each with their own abilities: Earth ponies have a strong connection to the land and nature, Pegasi can fly and influence the weather, and Unicorns can perform magic using their horns. Alicorns possess a combination of these abilities and traditionally hold important royal positions, although not every alicorn is a ruler. Pony society includes cities, villages, royal courts, schools, farms, magical institutions, and communities with their own customs and traditions. Important locations include Canterlot, Ponyville, the Everfree Forest, the Crystal Empire, and the ancient Castle of the Two Sisters. Beyond Equestria are civilizations such as the Dragon Lands, Griffonstone, Yakyakistan, the Changeling Hive, and Hippogriffia, each inhabited by different species with their own leaders, cultures, histories, and magical traditions. Friendship, cooperation, and understanding between different communities are central themes throughout the series.

Equestria has a long history filled with legendary heroes, powerful rulers, ancient artifacts, and dangerous villains. Its founding began when the three pony tribes united against the Windigos, supernatural creatures that create freezing conditions from hatred and hostility. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna once used the Elements of Harmony to defeat Discord, the Spirit of Chaos, while Luna's transformation into Nightmare Moon led to her banishment to the moon for a thousand years. Other major historical events include King Sombra's conquest of the Crystal Empire, the disappearance and eventual return of the empire, and the sacrifice of Starswirl the Bearded and the other Pillars of Old Equestria to imprison the Pony of Shadows. Important legends involve the Tree of Harmony, the six Elements of Harmony, Grogar's Bewitching Bell, Gusty the Great, and the founding of Equestria itself. Throughout the series, Twilight Sparkle and her friends face threats from enemies such as Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, Cozy Glow, King Sombra, and the Storm King, while forming friendships with creatures from other nations. The School of Friendship later becomes a place where ponies and other species learn to understand one another, and the series eventually ends with Twilight succeeding Celestia and Luna as ruler of Equestria. These events, legends, locations, species, and historical figures form the foundation of the show's world and are important for understanding its characters and their relationships.
