Origins
Born in Paris, France, to Pyunpyunmaru Akimoto (Yes. That's her father's name. Just roll with it), president of the Kobe trading company Akimoto Trading, and Françoise Akimoto (maiden name unknown), a French fashion designer and president of fashion compant 'Marie Laurent'. Net worth of her parents' companies are believed to be close to annual sales of 7 trillion yen. She has a younger sister named Yu, who is also multi-lingual like her. Hilariously, neither of her parents are bilingual: Her father only speaks Japanese and her mother only speaks French, requiring them to converse with a interpreter, despite being married for decades.
Despite being born in France, she never applied for French citizenship. (Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship) She is officially registered as a resident of Kobe, where her father was born. She has rarely been there though and doesn't speak with a Kansai accent.
As a child, she played with toys that boys liked and was even scouted to be a model. At the age of five, she was chosen as the mascot girl for a famous confectionery shop and attracted attention throughout France, but she became so famous that she was even kidnapped one time. However, she managed to disarm the kidnapper herself and given a commendation from French National Police. At the age of six, she ran away from her villa and took a train alone from Paris to Germany, demonstrating her tomboyish and adventurous spirit from a young age.
It is said that she was quite a handful when she was a child and her parents never had a moment's peace. At the age of 15, she was sent to a prestigious girls' school in Switzerland. This boarding school attracted wealthy students from all over the world, and the curriculum was apparently very strict and demanding, focusing on manners, discipline, and general education. During this time, she achieved brilliant results, winning piano competitions (a skill she had excelled at since childhood) and placing in European cake-making contests. She also chased after and caught a thief who had broken into the boarding school, while her female friends were shaken up.
She graduated at the age of 17 and returned to her parents in France, but later moved to Japan to help her father expand his trading business. In the original story, she attends a national university, but in the anime version, he attends a prestigious university in Minato Ward. After graduation, she turned down a job his father had arranged for him and instead entered police academy out of idealism. The following year, she was assigned to the Kameari Park Koban, where she remains to this day.
Despite being born into immense wealth, Reiko remains down to earth and not really interested in money. Her only vices seem to be occasional shopping sprees and again, occasionally wearing high end clothes and jewelry. She is actually quite generous and often financially helps out people around her and often makes appearances in charity drives or advertisements pro bono. She even lends Ryotsu money, but he rarely pays it back. As of the volume 108, Ryotsu owns Reiko about 2 million yen, which is slightly lower than what Ryotsu owes to Keiichi. Reiko often makes him repay her by having him work part-time as an assistant in baking cakes or helping her carry her bags when shopping.
Currently, she lives alone in a building in a prime location in Tokyo that looks like a huge apartment complex. She is occasionally troubled by one-sided phone calls and gifts from men who have feelings for her, and as a result, she moves frequently. Currently, in addition to his work at the police station, there are several companies registered in her name, making her approximately 100 million yen per hour. She claims that she has never accepted any allowances from her parents since joining the police and her police salary is enough to get by.
Life at Kochikame
Reiko first appears as a substitute for the ailing Yoichi Terai, and she is introduced in a spectacular way: crashing a mini patrol car into the police station's entrance. Initially, she is depicted as being a bit of a klutz and menace, such as mistaking the brake for the accelerator, crashing into another car after a sudden acceleration and then arresting the other driver without apologizing, and throwing a vase at the chief after he badmouths her. Furthermore, she was portrayed as a spoiled, pampered young lady with a strong will, capable of rivaling Ryotsu. She mellowed out very quickly however, and became a much more sensible, likeable and knowledgeable lady with many talents.
In addition, when she first appeared in the original manga, she had several weaknesses, such as fear of dogs and being bad at swimming. Reiko was initially scared of dogs so much, when she saw the a dog that frequented the koban, she would scream and throw things at it. This caused the dog to feel responsible and run away from the police station. Meanwhile, Reiko witnessed a child drowning in a river and tried to save the child, but a secondary accident nearly caused her to drown as well. The dog, who had witnessed the whole thing, brought Ryotsu and the others, and Reiko and the child were rescued. After that, Reiko overcame her fear of dogs and began to treat them with care.
She is in a good relationship with her superior Ryotsu but also will not hesistate to get violent if she notices her schemes and antics. Having worked with him for many years, she is very familiar with how his mind works, and sometimes sees through his schemes faster than Chief Ohara.
She is also good friends with Keiichi, who has a similar background, having born into considerable wealth. Despite the rumors, Reiko and Keiichi are just good friends and there is nothing romantic going on between them. She is also close with Matoi, as the latter even gifted her a crudely knitted but sincere scarf as a birthday girft.
Talents
She is also an excellent marksman (she once won an Olympic gold medal) and displayed an occasional wild and crazy personality that would put Ryotsu to shame. She is a talented driver (though she can be a speed demon who can drive at 200 km/h on the highways), very knowledgeable in fashion, cooking, and sports, and also possesses maternal qualities. As a result, she receives many marriage proposals from men, but they all end in failure as she has no interest in marriage. Her father desperately trying to get Reiko married soon, so Akimoto Group can have an heir.
Reiko's many talents also include playing piano. She works as a piano tutor on the side, and has helped several students gain admission to music and art universities. Reiko also enjoys baking cakes as a hobby, but because of her perfectionist nature, she refuses to accept a finished product if it doesn't look perfect. Because how good she is at baking cakes, her products are always a welcome sight in the station. In fact, she sometimes delivers cakes to people who her father offended to smooth things over. One time, Ryotsu noticed this and started making inferior, fake Reiko cakes and selling them to other department stores for profit. When Reiko found out, she was so furious, she chased Ryotsu across the town with an attack helicopter.
Having studied ballet from the age of six, she is extremely flexible and could easily perform many ballet routines. She has a free course which she teaches ballet to female police officers in her spare time.
Uniform
She does not wear the standard issue TMPD uniform, and from her first appearance, she has worn a custom, pink designer uniform. Since she has permission from the Metropolitan Police Department's Uniform Division, other officers often just ignore her bright pink uniform. When she first appeared, her neckline was more open than it is now. Also, although the color is the same, the design is different in the anime version and the original manga. The reason her skirt is short is 'because it is easy to move in', and once she was warned by Ryotsu to wear a standard skirt, but she tore it when chasing a pervert because it was difficult to run in, and immediately went back to the original length. As the series progressed, her large breasts were emphasized more and more, and in particular, the cover illustrations often featured close-ups of her breasts in bikinis. In the story, some characters were even astonished by their size.
