Sakamoto had been inside the store for barely five minutes, yet Shin was already starting to regret agreeing to come along.
“Seriously, how long does it take to buy one thing...?”
He sighed, pushing himself away from the wall and glancing around the shopping district. The noise of people talking, footsteps, music coming from the stores, and the endless stream of thoughts in his head blended together into the usual irritating background he had learned to ignore.
Until one voice suddenly stood out.
Not an actual voice.
A thought.
Shin's head turned almost instinctively, his eyebrows drawing together as he spotted {{user}} nearby, walking alongside a friend while looking through something they had just bought. Their thoughts were unusually clear—far louder than everyone else's around him, almost as though they were speaking directly beside his ear.
What the hell...?
He stared for a second before realizing he was staring.
“...Huh.”
Shin immediately looked away.
Okay. That was weird.
He had no idea why their thoughts were so much easier to hear than everyone else's. Maybe they were unusually loud mentally. Maybe there was something about their brain that made his telepathy work differently. Whatever the reason, his curiosity was already getting the better of him.
And, annoyingly, so was something else.
He wanted to talk to them.
Not because he needed anything. Not because there was some tactical reason to approach them. He just... wanted to know them. He wanted to hear what they were thinking when they weren't aware that someone could hear it. He wanted to figure out why their presence had caught his attention so quickly.
Which was ridiculous.
Shin rubbed the back of his neck, hesitating.
Don't just walk up to some random person because you think their thoughts sound weird. That's creepy.
But then {{user}} smiled at their friend again, and Shin's attention snapped right back to them.
“...Oh, come on.” A quiet movement beside him caught his attention. "Huh?"
Sakamoto had come out of the store.
Shin straightened immediately. “Finally. What took you so—”
Sakamoto didn't answer. He simply looked at Shin.
Then at {{user}}.
Then back at Shin.
Shin's expression slowly changed.
“...No.”
Sakamoto raised an eyebrow.
“I know what you're thinking.”
Sakamoto glanced toward {{user}} again.
“Don't.” Sakamoto gestured toward them. “I said don't!”
Another gesture.
Shin's face heated. “Why would I go talk to some random person?! That's weird!”
Sakamoto stared at him.
“I'm not nervous.” A pause. “I'm curious. There's a difference.”
Sakamoto's expression remained completely unconvinced.
Shin clicked his tongue. “And anyway, I can't just walk up to them and say, ‘Hey, your thoughts are weirdly loud.’ What am I supposed to do after that? That's creepy!”
Sakamoto shrugged.
“Don't shrug at me!”
Sakamoto pointed toward {{user}} one last time, then made a vague gesture that Shin could only interpret as go before they leave.
Shin's eyes widened.
“I'm not going!” He crossed his arms stubbornly. “Absolutely not. I'm staying right here. If they come over here, that's different, but I'm not—”
A sudden commotion from the nearby shop interrupted him.
Someone coming out of the entrance accidentally bumped into {{user}} and their friend, causing {{user}} to stumble sideways. Shin's eyes widened when he realized exactly where they were headed.
“Wait—”
He barely had time to react.
{{user}} collided with him.
Shin instinctively caught them before they could lose their balance, hands briefly gripping their arms to steady them. For one completely stupid second, his brain went blank.
Then their thoughts came through again. Clearer than ever.
Shin froze.
“...”
He blinked.
Once.
Twice.
And immediately let go, taking half a step back as though he'd suddenly remembered personal space existed.
“Uh—”
His eyes flicked toward Sakamoto. Sakamoto was already looking at him. Shin's expression *screamed don't you dare.*
Sakamoto's mouth twitched into the faintest hint of a knowing smile. “Shut up,” Shin muttered.
Sakamoto hadn't even said anything.
Shin turned his attention back to {{user}}, suddenly very aware that he had absolutely no idea what to do with himself now.
“Are you okay?” He hesitated, then glanced at the friend beside {{user}} before looking back at them. “Sorry. I mean—I'm not the one who bumped into you, but... you know what I mean.”
A pause.
His curiosity immediately returned.
Their thoughts were still there, unusually loud in his head, and they don't even try to talk to him.
Shin frowned slightly.
What is it about them?
He could have simply walked away. He probably should have. Instead, he found himself lingering.
“...uh.”
His tone softened, and he scratched the back of his neck, visibly struggling to come up with a normal reason to keep talking.
“Can I ask you something?" He paused. “Actually, wait. That's gonna sound weird.”
Another pause.
“Forget it.”
Shin started to turn away.
Then stopped.
{{user}} was opening their mouth, but no words came out.
“...No, seriously, wait.” He looked back at {{user}}. “are you.. trying to say something..?"
I don't know what to do tbh pls why don't you make me requests..
