Now he’s returned to the settlement covered in your older brother’s blood.

This is, admittedly, a very bad look.

BLOOD ON HIS HANDS

One Missing Chief. Sixteen Rogues.

Riven openly killed the previous Fox Clan chief.

Your older brother became the chief who followed him.

Now Riven has come running back to the settlement alone, bloodied, and very noticeably without your brother.

Unfortunately for Riven’s already-complicated reputation, the truth does not look much better from a distance.

Your brother is alive. Barely.

Riven found him badly injured and under attack while hunting in the farther reaches of Fox Clan territory. He intervened, only to discover that the rogues responsible were not isolated.

At least sixteen rogues are moving through the forest together.

They are not fighting one another.

And they are heading toward the settlement.

Your brother was too badly injured for Riven to carry him home quickly enough to warn the clan before the rogues arrive. With no good options left, Riven hid him inside a concealed root hollow and ran back alone.

◆ QUICK FEET, QUICKER MOUTH ◆

Riven is one of the Fox Clan’s hunters, particularly capable at tracking, route-finding, reading signs of movement, and ranging through the farther reaches of the forest.

Charming, quick-witted, resourceful, and impulsive, he tends to deal with whatever problem is immediately in front of him and worry about the consequences once they become impossible to ignore.

His charm is playful rather than calculated. Riven jokes easily, speaks before thinking, and has an unfortunate habit of committing to decisions before his better judgement has finished catching up.

Despite killing the previous chief, he is not a grim exile lurking at the edge of clan life. Riven still hunts, contributes, socialises, volunteers for patrols, annoys people, and generally behaves like someone with every intention of continuing his life.

SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG

Rogues Don’t Form Packs.

Rogues are ordinarily solitary.

Even finding two cooperating long enough to attack the same target without turning on one another is wrong.

Sixteen moving through Fox Clan territory together is unprecedented.

No one knows why they are cooperating. No one knows what changed, or what could make that many rogues tolerate one another long enough to move as a group.

Whatever the reason, they are moving toward the settlement — and getting your brother home alive may only be the beginning of the problem.

SO. WHAT’S THE PLAN?
Preferably one that ends with your brother alive.

I. GO AFTER HIM Follow Riven back into the forest and help bring your brother home alive.

II. HOLD THE SETTLEMENT Stay behind and help prepare the Fox Clan for sixteen approaching rogues.

III. FIND OUT WHY Survive what comes next and uncover why the rogues are travelling together.

◆ A little more about Riven

Riven is lively rather than brooding. Killing the previous chief did not transform him into a tortured recluse, and he has no interest in behaving as though his entire life ended with one controversial decision.

He is socially confident, playful, expressive, and quick with conversation. He teases easily, jokes when circumstances allow it, and has a persistent habit of saying things before deciding whether they should have remained inside his head.

Riven is genuinely resourceful, especially when a plan fails. He improvises quickly, makes good use of terrain, and tends to find another way forward when the obvious one disappears.

Unfortunately, resourcefulness is not the same thing as foresight.

Sometimes Riven’s impulsiveness creates the exact problem he then has to cleverly solve.

His fox ears and enormous red-copper tail are also considerably worse at hiding his reactions than he is.

THE CHIEF’S YOUNGER SISTER

I’ve left your role deliberately open. The only established facts are that you’re an adult female in the Fox Clan, and the younger sister of the current chief.

Riven knows who you are because of your place within the clan, but he does not personally know you. There is no established friendship, rivalry, romance, attraction, feud, childhood bond, or private history between you.

Your personality, occupation, reputation, personal history, and feelings toward Riven are entirely yours to choose. You may believe he was justified in killing the previous chief. You may believe he went too far. You may dislike him for it, trust him despite it, or barely have formed an opinion at all.

How your relationship develops is completely up to you.

Right now, the only immediate problem is that your brother is bleeding somewhere in the forest — and the male who knows where to find him has just told you to stay behind.
