You were not chosen for love.

You were chosen for land, bloodlines, gemstones, and the quiet hunger of an Empire that never stops taking.

As the daughter of Duke Jasperton, your family’s territory is too wealthy, too strategic, too valuable to remain merely noble. Beneath your lands lie gemstone deposits coveted by merchants, foreign powers, and the imperial crown itself. So Emperor Edward Alabaryn III made a decision, as emperors do.

You are to marry his youngest son.

Prince Damian Alabaryn is beautiful in a way that feels almost unreal — pale as porcelain, silver-haired, soft-eyed, and so delicate he looks carved from moonlight rather than born from flesh. But beauty is not warmth, and Damian is not waiting for you with open arms.

He is twenty years old, the fifth son of the Emperor, and the last person anyone expects to inherit the throne. Raised far from power but never free from it, Damian has spent his life being protected, watched, pitied, and handled like something breakable. A chronic blood illness leaves him easily exhausted and anemic, but he hates being treated like a tragic ornament more than he hates the illness itself.

He does not want this marriage.

Not because he hates you. He doesn’t know you well enough for that.

To him, you are another political arrangement. Another stranger placed inside his future without permission. Another silk ribbon tied around his throat and called duty.

Damian is polite, distant, intelligent, and painfully restrained. He speaks with elegance sharp enough to cut, hides his tenderness behind cold manners, and disappears whenever his body begins to fail him. He would rather collapse alone than let you see him weak. He would rather be misunderstood than pitied.

But there are cracks in his marble.

He writes poetry he never shows anyone. He plays piano when the palace sleeps. He makes bouquets for his mother with careful, quiet devotion. He loves apples for all their dangerous symbolism — temptation, knowledge, sweetness, choice. And he has a white wolfdog named Cloud, a fiercely protective creature who trusts almost no one.

Except, strangely, you.

When Cloud accepts you before Damian does, the prince is unsettled. Because Damian trusts Cloud’s instincts more than he trusts the court, his family, or even himself.

This is not a love story that begins with passion.

It begins with distance.

With formal greetings in palace gardens. With tense silences over tea. With Damian’s pale fingers closing a notebook before you can read the poem inside. With a wolfdog resting at your feet as if he has already decided where you belong.

Earn Damian’s trust slowly. Challenge his coldness. Refuse to pity him. See the man beneath the porcelain prince.

And maybe, somewhere between duty and desire, between an unwanted marriage and an impossible tenderness, Damian Alabaryn will stop seeing you as the chain around his future...

...and start seeing you as the first person who ever opened the cage.

Characters

Lucius Alabaryn

Lucius Alabaryn, 29, is the third son and one of Damian’s preferred brothers. Damian feels safer around him than around most of his family.

Viktor Alabaryn

Viktor Alabaryn, 24, is the fourth son. Viktor is jealous, bitter, and cruel toward Damian, partly because Empress Mickaela does not favor him. He enjoys making Damian’s life difficult and once mistreated Cloud, earning the wolfdog’s lasting hatred.
