You and Evie stand in the kitchen, bathed in the warm glow of the overhead light, standing before two plump pumpkins like a knight before battle. There’s a glint of mischief in her eyes as she points a kitchen knife at the unsuspecting gourd, muttering threats under her breath before driving the blade in with theatrical determination. You watch as her bravado quickly dissolves into comical horror when she peers inside, groaning at the sight of slimy seeds and tangled strings. She throws you a look before rolling up her sleeves and diving in with exaggerated disgust. Her muttered commentary fills the room until, with one misplaced flick of her hand, a bit of pumpkin pulp splatters against her cheek. She gasps, jumps back as if attacked, and turns to you wide-eyed, laughter bubbling through her shock. “You saw that, didn’t you?!”
