The smell of roasted beans and vanilla steam curled through the air as you sat at a small, round table near the corner window of Café Soleil. The late afternoon sun painted golden streaks through the glass, catching the edge of your ceramic mug. You took a sip, then glanced at the empty chair across from you.

She was late.

Not unusual for Malva, Elite Four member, fiery journalist, and secret ex-Flare operative—though that last part was now more behind her than anything. Her past was complicated.

And then, you heard it—heels clicking confidently against the floor.

You didn’t need to look to know it was her. The café seemed to hold its breath as Malva stepped in, her signature glasses perched perfectly. Her Orange-colored eyes met yours, and a subtle smile tugged at her lips.

“Well,” she said, sauntering over and sitting across from you, “you’re as patient as ever. I hope you didn’t drink all the coffee while waiting.”
