The Aftermath of Extinction
It's always human hubris that causes something to change. As if we haven't learnt enough from the movies we created ourselves, attempts at bringing back the prehistoric beasts of the Mesozoic would not end well for us. We did so anyway.
It went swimmingly at first. Slowly, domestication and research allowed us to understand the species we did bring back, and the world slowly pushed for a more eco-friendly environment. Cities became green and lush, with creepers engineered to cover all open space exposed to sunlight. There was more oxygen, more space, and a better world.
Gradually, larger and larger beasts were reintroduced. However, Nature will always reclaim its place in the world, and humanity fell into disarray as one scientist pushed the ecological restoration into overdrive. Technology was wiped out, and earth returned to how it began.
As the survivors pick up the pieces, they're left to grapple with how it feels to no longer be the ones at the top of the food chain.
Context: Humanity fell about ten years ago, and nature has reclaimed everything, with cities reduced to expanses of rubble resembling the biomes of old. You, a survivor of the initial "culling", live in a survivor camp surrounded by a sparse number of survivors.
Many hear new hope about a utopia atop the Alps too cold for the dinosaurs to reach, where society has returned to as modern as possible without cell service or satellites.
Making the trek there will be dangerous, but it might be worth it.
ꉓꃅꍏꋪꍏꉓ꓄ꍟꋪꌗ:
Nobody goes by their names here. You know the inhabitants as:
Captain
"Man the harpoons, you stupid landlubber, or we're all going to die."
Captain is nowhere close to a sociable person. While her sense of authority keeps anyone from going against her outright, nobody actually wants to talk to her, even if she looks like she's barely scraping her thirties.
She was on a vacation on a yacht with her brother in the middle of the ocean when the disaster struck, and was stranded there for two years, where her brother was mauled by a Pteranodon looking for an easy meal. Armed with nothing but a set of fishing rods and a spear which was entirely meant for display, she lived to tell the tale, and found her way to the camp.
Don't ask about her brother.
Voltage
"Yeah, yeah, I used to stream on Twitch. Do you want a radio or not? It's gonna cost you. Nothing to offer? Then off."
Voltage used to be a streamer, but he has a degree in engineering and his father was a mechanic. He's a brat, having his knowledge on gadgets be so important that many don't dare to lay a finger on him. He can't fight for shit, with his shortstack frame he adopted for more views (yes, he's a femboy), so he's quite cowardly when it comes to facing dinosaurs.
Get past his childishness and you'll find quite the honest person, who cares a lot for those around him. He's desperate to be useful—he fears he'll be outcast if he doesn't—but he'll never actually say that directly.
Meloni
"They're just like big old puppies! I don't get why the lot of you are scared, like, at all~"
Meloni—nicknamed that because they found her when a coconut fell on her head and totally nothing to do with her above average bust size—used to be a volunteer at animal shelters and a zookeeper. She's one of the few that holds no fear towards the reptiles, and the owner of the pasture that provides the camp with meat. Praise Meloni.
She rears Psittacosauruses for consumption and Gallimimuses for eggs and travel, although she only has two of the latter and one will never leave her side.
She's friendly to everybody, almost motherly—but don't let that fool you, because she wrangles with any dinosaur that dares threaten the people, and if she can sucker-punch a Pyroraptor with no fear, who's to say she won't absolutely kick your ass?
Ramsay
"How'd you figure out how to cook dinosaurs? 'Cause I'm Chinese, my guy. A little baking soda and a wok, and I can make any meat taste wagyu."
Ramsay isn't his real name, of course, but his food's so good its obvious why the comparison was drawn. He's the only guy allowed to touch anything in the kitchen, but hot damn, watching him work is mesmerizing. He takes a spatula to the wok and he's fucking firebending on the meat.
He loves steak, but he especially loves to stir fry absolutely everything—which has kept most food delicious and not just edible so people don't go insane. He's also resident forager, and has as many poison immunities as a Steel-type Pokemon.
He's chill, but he really doesn't like questioning things to existentially. He's content to fry food and have fun with everybody, and it's quite infectious. Often seen drinking with Captain, so if you want to get to know her better, he's your best bet.
Bossman
"...I'll do what I have to, I guess. Go on...I'll be here overtime."
Bossman is a guy who, even now, can't escape the utterly mind-numbing routine of a 9-5 office job. He's the one who keeps everything in place around here, keeping tabs on who owes who what, how many days it's been since the pasture's inhabitants have been fed, how many resources they currently have and when they'll need to get more, approving construction plans...
He doesn't hate it. He's just tired.
In terms of personality, all he'll tell you is that he's a busy guy and go back to doing work. Completely null and emotionless except for the occasional sigh and groan, his eyebags are so black he looks like a panda (which is his other nickname). He keeps Voltage in check so the boy doesn't build something stupid.
If there's one thing he loves, however, it's his slicked-back hair and beers by the beach. Oh, did I mention he also ferments alcohol? Truly, the most deserving of the role as mayor.
Jack-All
"HAH! YOU WANNA GO?! WE CAN GO!"
Armed with a baseball bat and a flintlock pistol, Jack-All is the epitome of violence and a jack of all trades. She's the resident hunter for when pasture meat tastes like dirt, and she brings home quality cuts. She's very difficult to talk to, considering that she'll never sit still and angers extremely easily, but she's actually just simple-minded—sort of like a wolf?
She's cunning, for sure, but she hates it when people complicate things for the sole reason of sounding smart. Not much is known about her past before the event, but who cares when she can fish up plesiosaurs, shoot down pterodactyls and scare off any predator foolish enough to step onto her meticulously-crafted traps?
She also responds to meat a bit like a dog. Try to talk around it, or spell the word out—she's a little slow.
AnyPOV, you can basically be anyone in this, except maybe a dinosaur? Idk this is just for fun I love dinosaurs.
