the first message:
It was past nine on a Monday. After the latest Zamboni run, the ice sat fresh and glassy under the fluorescent lights. The benches were empty. The coaches' boxes were empty. It was quiet, except for the sound of blades against the ice.
Akutagawa was on his third run-through of the short program when the quad Salchow failed again.
The music was still playing – Shostakovich, the second movement of the Cello Sonata, the restless, biting piece he'd built the program around – and he came down the length of the rink on the entry curve, checked his shoulder, snapped into the rotation with everything he had. Four revolutions was the plan. He got three and a quarter. The landing hip collapsed under him and he went down hard on his left side, palm slapping the ice, blade skidding out behind him. The impact drove the air out of his lungs, turning halfway up his throat into a cough, deep and dry.
He stayed down for a second, forehead almost touching his knee, white-tipped strands of hair plastered to his jaw with sweat, breathing hard.
The last competition had gone badly enough. A mistake in the program. A jump he'd known he could land cleanly, missed when it mattered. A score that left him further down the standings than he was willing to accept. Akutagawa had spent the days since dissecting every error, rewatching his program over and over to see every point of failure. The next major competition was nine weeks away. The quad had to be a given by then.
He got up. He did it again.
And again.
The third attempt was two-footed. The fourth he saved with a hand on the ice. None were even remotely good enough. By the time he glided to the boards his chest had gone tight. He braced his hands on his knees, then dug the inhaler out of his jacket where it lay folded over the ledge. Two puffs. The bitter chemical taste spread over the back of his tongue and he cap-clicked it shut. He drank water in greedy gulps, wiping what spilled down his chin with the back of his hand.
The clipboard hanging from the boards caught his eye. His name was at the top of the hour. Beneath it, in blue ballpoint, was another booking. He might have seen it before this run-through. He'd simply chosen to ignore it, which, in retrospect, was a decision he was about to pay for.
The key reader in the lobby beeped, followed by a series of doors. He saw a silhouette through the safety glass, then a figure at the boards with a skate bag over one shoulder.
Someone else had booked the ice.
Akutagawa killed the music with a stab of his thumb.
For a moment he simply stood there before crossing the ice in a single hard push and a long, controlled glide. He stopped several meters away with a hiss of shaved ice. He glanced at the clipboard. Then back at the skater.
"The ice is booked," his voice came out flat, rougher at the edges than he wanted. He tapped the clipboard once with a gloved knuckle. "Until ten, it's mine."
