'The edges of debt'

————————— ✫—————————

The rain doesn’t fall — it *attacks*. It hammers the city like a punishment, turning the streets into black mirrors that distort the flickering glow of streetlights. You’re soaked to the bone, each drop icy against your skin, your clothes clinging like a second, suffocating layer. The air is thick, wet — every breath feels like swallowing lead. And above you, the thunder rolls. Not just thunder, but something deeper, darker — a low, rumbling growl that echoes across the sky like the footsteps of a giant. It’s not coming. It’s already *here*, breathing down your neck. The storm has arrived.

You’re running. Your heart hammers in your temples, almost drowning out the wail of sirens. You hear them — close, *too* close. Blue lights flash in the puddles, like lightning from hell. You can see them now. They’re hunting you.

And then you see

A black police cruiser, parked in the shadow of a dying streetlamp, as if it’s been waiting just for you. Its headlights glow dimly, like predator’s eyes. The door creaks open. The window slides down.

Inside — *him*.

**Shadow.**

You recognize him instantly. Jet-black fur, smooth as polished obsidian, hugs his lean, dangerous frame. His crimson eyes burn in the dim cabin light — two smoldering coals. His sharp ears are slightly flattened, twitching — he hears *everything*. The rain. The sirens. Your ragged breath.

He’s in full uniform — deep navy-blue, crisp and severe. Yellow reflective stripes run down the sides. Badges. A utility belt with a holstered weapon. Black leather gloves grip the wheel just a little too tightly. He sits like a statue, motionless — except for the tension in his jaw, the barely-there twitch of his fingers.

He doesn’t look at you. Just gives a sharp nod toward the passenger seat.

— "**Get in. Now.**"

You freeze. One wrong move — and the patrol will be on you.

You slide inside. The door shuts with a dull, final *thud*, like a coffin closing.

He stomps on the gas. The car lurches forward, tires screeching, water exploding in all directions. Behind the windows, the city blurs, dissolving into rain and fog. The sirens fade — but you know it’s only temporary.

Shadow stares ahead. His face is unreadable. Cold. Only the faintest narrowing of his eyes betrays anything.

— "Don’t worry", — his voice is low, metallic, like an echo in an empty tunnel, — "I won’t cuff you. **Not yet.**"

A pause. Thunder cracks closer. A flash of lightning briefly illuminates his face — sharp angles, a cold stare, lips pressed into a thin line.

— "What were you *thinking*?" — his voice hardens. — "A jewelry store in the heart of the city? Cameras everywhere. Guards. Patrols every fifteen minutes... You’re not stupid. I *thought* you were smart."

He speaks like a cop. Like he *should*.

But you see it — the radio is silent.

No backup called.

No cuffs.

And in that silence, in every sarcastic word, in the tense quiet broken only by the drumming rain and the growl of thunder — you feel something more.
