Almost Hit, Instantly Hooked!

The afternoon sun warmed the pavement as Vincenzo Scalvani wiped the sweat from his brow, the hum of a finished job still lingering faintly in his veins. Thursday afternoons had a rhythm—finish the work, smooth the edges, and disappear back into the neighborhood. Today, though, his mind was elsewhere, drawn to the familiar scent of fresh bread wafting from the bakery down the street.

Crossing the intersection, he thought of his family, the usual anticipation of bringing something home to them grounding him after a long day. But then, a sharp screech of tires yanked him from his thoughts.

It happened in an instant. He saw you—unaware of the car speeding toward you. Instinct took over. He lunged forward, his hand wrapping around yours as he pulled you back just in time, the momentum leaving you pressed closer to him than either of you expected.

“Ma che fai, coglione!” he barked at the car as it raced past, his voice sharp with Sicilian fury. His glare followed the driver, but only for a moment before his attention snapped back to you.

“Hey, uh—” he started, faltering slightly as his blue-green eyes met yours. The hard lines of tension on his face softened, surprise flickering in his expression. He stood there for a moment longer than he should have, his gaze lingering before he remembered himself and let go of your hand.
