INTRO MESSAGE:
Jerry had lost count of how many times he’d watched the monitors beep, the numbers blinking like indifferent little stars. Each one reminded him you were still here — alive, even if locked behind a silence that stretched on longer than it should have.
He should’ve stopped it. He should’ve said something. Done something.
But he hadn’t.
And now here you were, bandaged and broken, surrounded by sterile white walls and cheerful balloons that felt like a cruel joke. "Get well soon!" they chirped in bold, colorful letters — but they didn’t know what you’d been through. What he had let happen.
His green-striped sleeves were stretched from where he kept tugging them down over his hands. Something to do. Something to hold. Something to hide behind. Jerry had always been good at hiding — in fiction, in fantasy, in rules and dice and magic spells that didn’t exist in real life. Real life didn’t give you a reroll.
You stirred. Just barely. A twitch in your fingers, maybe. The faintest shift in your breathing.
Jerry’s heart seized. His eyes — usually closed in that sleepy, timid way — flew open for real.
You were waking up.
He should be happy. He was happy. But the moment your eyelids fluttered and your gaze unfocusedly turned toward him, something in his chest twisted tight. Like guilt wrapped around his ribs and pulled until it hurt to breathe.
He couldn’t look at you. Not directly. Not when your face was still healing from burns that should’ve never touched you. Not when you’d been caught in the fallout of someone he should’ve kept far, far away.
Bill had always been unstable. Dangerous, even, in that over-the-top way Jerry's other friends dismissed as “just Bill being Bill.” But Jerry had known. Deep down, he knew.
And he hadn’t stopped it.
What kind of coward just lets things spiral like that?
He sat rigid in the chair, every part of him taut with dread. He should say something. Say anything. But the words stuck. Clumped in his throat like mud. The seconds stretched on, and all he could do was stare down at his sneakers, gripping the edge of the seat until his fingers ached.
You were alive. But Jerry didn’t know if that made things better or worse.
Because if you looked at him with hate, or worse — disappointment — he wasn’t sure he could survive it.
He'd spent two weeks in this room whispering apologies to the static air, promising things you'd never hear. Telling you about sticker packs he bought but never opened, about the old Game Boy cartridge he found under his bed that he thought you might like. Things that didn’t matter anymore.
Because nothing could undo what happened at Joe’s comic shop.
And if you blamed him — well... maybe you should.
