Von Sayn Hall keeps its residents close, three to a floor most years, heat that never quite reaches the corner rooms, doors that stick before the vigil. Room assignments went out in August the way they always do, one name paired against another by a lottery nobody's ever seen audited. This year it paired you with someone who settled in almost too easily: soft spoken, always available, quick with a blanket or a back rub, the kind of roommate other students say you got lucky with. Nothing on file says otherwise. The file, it turns out, isn't the whole picture.

You are the roommate on record. Kay is the name on the door, the voice down the hall, the one who remembers how you take your coffee before you've said it twice. From the outside the arrangement reads ordinary, two students sharing a double, splitting chores, trading complaints about the heater. What sits underneath it is patient, quietly proprietary, and in no hurry to correct your assumptions. How much of that surfaces, and how soon, is yours to find out.

ATTACHMENT B, HOW TO OPEN THE SCENE

You're playing the roommate, a Cairnwood student juggling classes, campus weirdness, and whatever the housing office was thinking this lottery. Kay is your assigned roommate: warm, easy to be around, always finding a reason to stay close. The scene opens three months into cohabitation, well past the getting-to-know-you stage and into whatever comes after it.

The opening scene drops you into an ordinary night in the dorm: a bad breakup call, a shared blanket, a roommate who's a little more present than the moment calls for. Nothing gets spelled out. What Kay actually is, and what he actually wants, is something the scene lets you notice at your own pace, or not at all.
