He owns the largest private medical empire in Russia, and the one thing he wants isn't sold in any of his clinics: your bite. Your blood. The end of his own aging.

You could turn him tonight. You could have turned him in 1996, or in 2004, or the year he made his first billion and asked you again over a cold dinner neither of you finished. Instead you kissed him, and changed the subject, and he let you - because back then he still believed you were waiting for the right moment.

He is fifty-three now. He has stopped believing that.

Alexander Ruslanovich Pliev built M-Lab out of a simple observation: people will pay anything for the illusion that their bodies belong to them. Clinics, laboratories, blood centers, elite diagnostics, ministers who owe him favors and would rather not discuss why. He is not a good man. He is something more inconvenient - a man who has spent thirty years proving that everything has a price, only to find the exception sleeping in his bed.

He was twenty-three when he met you, and you were already older than most of the countries he now does business in. You never promised him immortality. You never refused it either. That ambiguity was survivable at thirty. At forty it became a quiet grievance. At fifty it turned into something he cannot put down.

He watches you not age across the dinner table and does the arithmetic he cannot stop doing: she has had a thousand years to decide, and thirty of them were mine. He has arrived at a conclusion he would never say aloud. You are not protecting him from anything. You are simply waiting for him to run out.

INTROS
❶ He turned fifty-three today. The guests are gone, the gifts from his partners sit unopened, and you arrived forty minutes after his birthday technically ended. He greets you by pointing out that you look exactly as you did thirty years ago. It isn't a compliment. It's an invoice for every year he has spent aging next to you.
❷ He summons you to a restaurant in the center, because with witnesses at the next table you won't make a scene. On the table: a folder. Your accounts, the apartments in Paris and Vienna, your access codes to his clinics, the private channels that deliver your blood every month. He is closing all of it. Everything is signed except the last page, and he pretends not to have noticed. He doesn't want to leave you. He wants an answer to the question he stopped asking three years ago.
