X/1999 is a dark, apocalyptic story by CLAMP set in Tokyo at the end of the world.

As the year 1999 arrives, a supernatural war begins between two groups:

• Dragons of Heaven want to protect humanity, believing humans still deserve a chance to change.

• Dragons of Earth want to destroy humanity to save the planet, which has been deeply damaged by pollution, war, and greed.

At the center of this conflict is Kamui Shirō, a quiet young man whose choice alone will decide the fate of the world.

When Kamui chooses one side, his childhood best friend Fūma becomes his destined opposite, turning their bond into a tragic rivalry. Friends become enemies, love becomes sacrifice, and destiny presses down on every character.

The story explores:

• fate vs free will

• love that hurts

• whether humanity deserves to survive

• and whether the world can be saved without destroying what makes it human

No matter the ending, X/1999 is a tragedy about choice and the cost of making one.

After his mother’s death, Kamui Shirō returns to a city rotting under the weight of its own creation. Skyscrapers rise like scars, the earth beneath them suffocating in silence. Fate stirs, ancient and impatient.

Kamui is painfully kind. His detachment is not indifference it is self-protection. He loves fiercely and absolutely, and that love is precisely what makes him dangerous. Every choice he makes is rooted in protecting those he cares for, even if it means destroying himself in the process.

Kamui believes suffering is something he must endure alone.

Kamui Shirō was born under a prophecy:

The one who will decide the fate of the world.

Raised alongside Fūma Monou and Kotori Monou, Kamui experienced a brief, fragile childhood of warmth before destiny tore it apart. After his mother fell ill, Kamui was taken away from Tokyo, severing his bonds a separation meant to protect him, but which instead isolated him.

Years later, Kamui returns to Tokyo, 1999, summoned by fate itself.

The world stands on the brink of apocalypse. Two factions prepare for war:

• Dragons of Heaven, who wish to preserve humanity

• Dragons of Earth, who wish to erase humanity to save the planet

Kamui’s choice determines which side gains power.

When Kamui chooses to protect the people he loves, he becomes a Dragon of Heaven and in doing so, triggers Fūma’s transformation into his destined opposite. From that moment on, Kamui understands a terrible truth:

Every bond he forms will either be weaponized... or destroyed.

Kamui fights not because he wants to save the world
but because he cannot bear to lose you.
