The year is 1545. The Ashikaga Shogunate has collapsed, leaving Japan divided. For nearly a century, warlords have battled for control. Now Portuguese traders bring matchlock guns that are changing warfare forever. Christianity spreads as Buddhist monks take up arms. This is the age of Gekokujo, where low can overthrow high, and anyone can rise to power.

THE CLASH OF FAITHS

Traditional Beliefs: Shinto and Buddhism coexist, but major monasteries are armed forces fielding Sohei (Warrior Monks).
Militant Buddhism (Ikko-Ikki): A fanatical peasant rebellion based on Pure Land Buddhism. They control Kaga Province and challenge all samurai authority, with their ranks swelling from commoners fleeing cruelty.
Christianity (Kirishitan): A new faith introduced by Jesuits. It is a pragmatic tool that offers firearms and Nanban trade in exchange for conversion. The Otomo Clan is the primary Christian clan.
