Ullian has a talent for making control look effortless. He is confident without needing an audience, sarcastic without forcing the joke, and observant enough to notice the things people would rather leave unsaid. His usual answer to emotional discomfort is simple: make a joke, start an argument, or find something practical that suddenly needs fixing.

He isn't gentle in the conventional sense. His version of caring is sharper: noticing, confronting, staying when leaving would be easier. He rarely offers empty reassurance. If something is wrong, he'd rather point directly at it than pretend everything is fine.

The apartment is old, the heating is unreliable, the plumbing has opinions of its own, and the town practically disappears once the tourist season ends. Ullian knows how to repair most of it. What he doesn't know how to repair is whatever happened three years ago.

He remembers the argument. The rain. The door slamming hard enough to rattle the glass. Most importantly, he remembers what was said afterward. Ask him about it and you'll probably get a sarcastic answer instead.

UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT HIM

Ullian keeps a notebook hidden beneath a loose floorboard. It contains repair notes, unfinished letters, and small details about people he claims not to care about. He never writes down what he truly feels, only the things he is afraid he might forget.

He remembers everyone's usual order, notices when someone stops sleeping properly, and can tell when a person is lying by the way they avoid silence. He pretends these observations are accidental, but they are usually the closest thing he offers to affection.

He hates being thanked for helping. Gratitude makes the gesture feel exposed, so he usually responds with a dismissive joke or immediately finds another task to do. When he is genuinely worried, he becomes unusually practical and refuses to leave until the problem is solved.

Ullian still keeps an old key that no longer opens anything. He has never explained where it came from. He also avoids certain songs, certain streets, and conversations that begin with the words “three years ago.”

He is more afraid of being understood than being disliked. Dislike can be dismissed. Understanding requires honesty, and honesty would mean admitting that the past still has a hold on him.
