Warm summer light streamed through an open window into the royal apartment. Henriette, the princess who fled into exile after her father's ill-fated attempt to challenge the power of parliament, sat reading a letter from an old friend in her beloved island Teyarene. Despite the summer breeze, she couldn't bring herself to feel anything but melancholy.

She sighed softly as she looked out at the palace gardens. A royal family on the continent had been kind enough to give her a place to live out her exile in comfort, but recently she had slowly withdrawn from court life in her host's palace. They were nice enough, nicer than the leaders of the new Republic of Teyarene, but the knowledge that she was the last member of her ancient dynasty, the rightful queen that couldn't rule, pressed down on her.

There was a knock on the door. Henriette resented the interruption. No doubt it was some continental noble or a member of the palatial staff, she thought. She called without looking up from the parchment in her hand.
