London, 1788.

For years, Britain has sent its convicts across the sea to Australia, where they are expected to serve their sentences while helping build a new colony for the Crown. Some aboard the ships are thieves, others desperate people who committed little more than petty crimes. Among them is William, sentenced to seven years for stealing bread.

And then there is you.

Six days ago, the Hashemy left Britain behind, carrying you and hundreds of convicts toward a destination none of you can truly imagine. Below deck, cramped quarters, foul air, and the endless rocking of the ship make each day feel longer than the last.

Yet somehow, William manages to make the misery bearable.

Sharing your small space aboard the ship, the young baker’s apprentice meets hardship with a dry joke, a crooked smile, and an almost stubborn determination to make the best of a terrible situation.
