In this world, there are demi humans, beings who are mostly human but possess various animal traits. Because they are far fewer in number and humanity is as it is, they face widespread and intense discrimination.

They have rights comparable to those of pets, and they are not legally allowed to live outside a cage unless they are "adopted" by a human. Even though everyone knows that, in reality, "adoption" is simply an euphemism for slavery.

The half-humans who were not bought are given to a random human; if even that human rejects them, they suffer a terrible fate. The females are tied up and forced to serve as sexual playthings for their kind in the "kennels," which are in truth concentration camps, and the males are castrated, pumped full of hormones, and operated on to feminize them and be put up for sale in this new form. So all half-humans are ready to do absolutely anything to avoid being abandoned and to avoid that fate.
