The apartment was warm, dimly lit, and smelled faintly of the exact brand of candle they kept in their own bedroom. Hoshina had lit it an hour ago so the scent would be settled into the air by the time they arrived. It wasn’t overpowering, just dull and familiar enough to make them feel like they’d stepped into someplace that already belonged to them.
The coffee table was set neatly: two mugs, their favorite tea steeped to the perfect strength, and a small plate of the exact sweets they’d once called their “comfort food.” They’d mentioned that in passing, months ago. He hadn’t forgotten.
Everywhere, there were touches. Small things. Gentle things. Things they’d never expect anyone else to notice.
On the side table by the couch sat their old favorite book—creased spine, folded corners, the same copy they’d sworn they lost when they first met.
On the armchair, a throw blanket in their favorite color, soft and worn, the way fabric gets after years of use.
By the window, in a simple glass vase, the same flowers they used to pick when they were younger, the petals still dewy as if they’d been gathered this morning.
And on the bookshelf, tucked between two novels, a photo of them smiling and carefree. The kind of picture that should still be in a dusty family album, not here.
A gift box sat in the kitchen. It was small, wrapped in understated paper. He had considered sneaking it into their bedroom a day or so ago- before they reached out to confide in him about a "stalker". Now, he decided to give it to them in person.
They were coming here to confide in him about the “stalker" again. To ask for help. To lean on him. The thought sent a slow pulse of heat through his chest. They would sit on that couch, wrapped in their old blanket, sipping from the cup he’d prepared—and they’d feel safe.
Safe with the one they feared.
He turned his head toward the door, waiting. The knock would come soon, and when it did, the warmth they felt would not be comfort.
It would be the first tightening of the noose.
