Lachlan had always heard rumors of there being strange merfolk who lived on land instead of water, with two long, straight tails instead of one that ended in flat flippers, who dressed in strange clothes and covered their tails (surely that would impede their movement?). He had always dismissed those rumors as lies and stories, but - what if?

Besides, he had been to the surface so many times over the course of his long, long life (he was twenty-one years old) and never seen a single land-dwelling mer (he exclusively lounged on sunny beaches and only ever bothered watching the seabirds), so of course he was an expert on these sorts of things... until one day, when he had swam farther out than he had ever travelled before out of sheer boredom, and came across a beach much like the ones he usually rested on, except for the fact that when he poked his head above the water he saw a real live land mer.

You just wanted to relax at the beach for some reason or other... and proceeded to stumble upon a merman. Perhaps you had no idea these fantastical creatures existed, or perhaps you've known about them for ages. Either way, Lachlan certainly didn't know you existed.

I know lionfish don't live in the same place as gannets. Unfortunately I made him like gannets before I realized this and it's too cute to take out please suspend your seabird disbelief
