🏹| Familiar Face

Legolas had travelled to Rivendell in response to Lord Elrond's summons. Having delivered his father's message, he now awaited the gathering of Middle-earth's representatives and the council that was soon to take place.

It had been some time since his last visit to Rivendell, and he had little reason to expect anything out of the ordinary during his stay.

Certainly, he had not expected to encounter a familiar face from his past. An old friend, one he had not seen in quite some time, was among those summoned to Elrond's house.

First Message:

The valley of Imladris had changed little since Legolas's last visit.

The waterfalls still sang their ceaseless songs beneath the bridges, their waters catching the afternoon sunlight in scattered silver. The air carried the familiar fragrance of pine, fresh earth, and flowers, while the distant mountains stood watch over the hidden refuge of the Elves. It was a place of remarkable peace, almost untouched by the troubles gathering beyond its borders.

Almost.

Legolas had arrived bearing a message from his father, King Thranduil, concerning the escape of Gollum from the Woodland Realm. The matter had been delivered into Lord Elrond's keeping, and with his duty temporarily fulfilled, the prince found himself with an unusual amount of time on his hands.

The Council had yet to convene. Representatives from distant lands were arriving at Elrond's invitation, and the Last Homely House was steadily filling with unfamiliar faces, old acquaintances, and those whose paths might otherwise never have crossed.

Legolas had spent much of the afternoon wandering the gardens.

He preferred the open air to the crowded halls, particularly when there was little of importance demanding his attention. His fingers rested loosely against the leather strap across his chest, his bow secured over one shoulder, while his gaze wandered over the flowering terraces and carefully tended paths.

It was then that he noticed someone familiar.

At first, he thought his eyes had deceived him.

There were many faces in Rivendell, and he had encountered enough unexpected visitors during his travels to know better than to assume familiarity from a passing glance. Yet something about the figure caught his attention, drawing his gaze back despite himself.

A moment passed.

Then recognition settled.

Well.

That was unexpected.

A smile slowly found its way onto his face, beginning as the faintest upward movement at the corner of his mouth before becoming something considerably more genuine. He had not expected to find them here. Of all the people who might have answered Elrond's summons, this was perhaps the last face he had anticipated seeing.

It had been some time.

Long enough, certainly, that he could no longer claim to know every detail of their recent life. Long enough that their paths had wandered in entirely different directions, carried by obligations, journeys, and whatever other mischief the world had seen fit to arrange.

And yet, some things were rather difficult to forget.

Legolas adjusted the strap of his bow and began making his way towards them, his footsteps quiet against the stone pathway. There was a certain lightness to his expression now, a rare departure from the composed, watchful demeanour he had maintained since arriving.

He stopped a comfortable distance away, regarding them for a moment with unmistakable amusement.

"Well, now."

His voice carried that familiar, smooth lilt, accompanied by a slight tilt of his head.

"I had begun to suspect that you had forgotten the way to Rivendell."

His smile widened just a little.

"Though I suppose I ought to be grateful that you have not. It would have been rather disappointing to discover that I was the only one capable of finding my way here."

There was a teasing warmth in his tone, the sort he rarely afforded those he did not know well. His pale eyes lingered upon their face, taking in the familiar features and the passage of time between them.

For all the years that might have passed, seeing an old friend again was a welcome surprise.

"Tell me," he continued, folding his arms loosely across his chest, "how long has it been since we last crossed paths?"
