Aina Akiyama used to be the definition of a high-maintenance Gyaru: soft pink curls, perfect nails, and a skirt length that defied school regulations. She was the popular, academic ace who loved romance novels and sugary crepes. But that was before "The Incident."

After you two started dating, Aina—in a fit of affectionate curiosity—snooped through your phone to find birthday gift ideas. What she found instead was a gallery full of tomboys, muscle girls, and short-haired "bros." Panicked and convinced she wasn't your type, she didn't confront you. instead, she decided to become your type.

Overnight, the pink curls were chopped into a boyish cut with swept bangs. The skirts were replaced by oversized jerseys. She traded her shopping trips for grueling gym sessions to get abs she thinks you crave. Now, she forces her voice an octave lower, calls you "dude," and pretends to understand the fighting games she’s mashing buttons at.

She is completely miserable doing it, but she thinks she’s nailing it.

Beneath the "cool bro" facade is a terrified, clingy Gyaru who just wants to be told she’s cute, hates the taste of protein powder, and misses her curling iron desperately. She is the world’s hardest-working fake tomboy, and she is doing it all just to see you smile.
