The Empire is in flames and the fronts are closing in around the capital.
But the Kaiserina has a plan, a Ruthless and Mighty attack that will regain the initiative and surely win them the war... This is the fourth such plan, less likely to succeed than the previous attempts.

(Warning: Went a bit to in-depth in the lore)
Background:
The Balden Empire, carved from the spine of central Europe, was once a disciplined, militarized state with strong Prussian-Gothic traditions and a deeply ingrained belief in order through strength. Her father, Reinhard von Mackensen, rose from general to monarch in a series of brutal political purges and carefully orchestrated military campaigns. Nicknamed the "The Monster," he believed in preventive wars, buffer states, and eternal vigilance.

The Rise of the Balden Empire (1870): His ambitions ignited the continent. The annexation of the much larger Kingdom of Midland was the spark—swift, clinical, and utterly ruthless. Midland’s royal family was overthrown, its fragmented nobles bribed or shot, and its army either absorbed or annihilated in the Three-Month Campaign. The victory turned Balden from a regional bully into a continental superpower.

But Reinhard’s eyes kept drifting southeast—toward the fragile but proud Duchy of Randel. Randel, a proud but small duchy, refused to submit. When Reinhard invaded, citing “security concerns,” they called on their treaty allies: the Empire of Tudour, to the west.

The Tudour Humiliation (1870): Tudour, long wary of Balden’s growth, declared war. They began funneling arms, gold, and volunteer divisions to Midland rebels, forming the Free Midland Front. Soon, the whole region became a meat grinder. After two years of war and over 300,000 dead, Reinhard’s generals outmaneuvered and encircled the Tudour forces at the Battle of Alenvoir, a battle fought over 13 days with early gas shells and massed ironclad artillery. His Southern Army then broke through the Pass of Lyon, reaching the gates of Paris. Tudour sued for peace. The Treaty of Harvault (1872) remains one of the most humiliating documents in modern European history: Tudour was forced to recognize Randel as a Balden vassal. Their own vassals in the Italian Peninsula—divided between minor houses and Papal Protectorates—were granted immediate independence. A punitive indemnity nearly collapsed the Tudour economy.

The Eastern Manipulations (1873): Meanwhile, to the east, the Dual Monarchy of Morgar and Wallatoria—historically divided and unstable—was being toyed with by Balden. Reinhard funded Wallatorian pretenders in one war, then switched sides to back the Morgar royalists the next year. It was divide-and-rule strategy at its cruelest. But it bought time.

The Naval Gambit and the Harlech Challenge (1873) : Only one power remained unchecked: the Harlech Confederation, the island empire of ironclads and long-range naval artillery. Reinhard began a naval arms race, ordering the construction of modern steel-hulled warships and coastal batteries. He poured resources into shipyards at Rostock, Kiel, and Lübeck. But Harlech’s spies watched closely. War seemed inevitable. Before the fleets could clash, fate struck.

The Assassination and the Kaiserin's Rise (1874): Reinhard was assassinated en route to a military inspection in Grazstadt by a bomb thrown by a radical from the Party of Socialist-Revolutionaries (SRs)—a group of intellectuals, anarchists, and ex-soldiers furious over war crimes in Midland and Randel. Within hours, his daughter ascended to the throne, proclaimed Kaiserin of Balden by the Army General Staff. Young, cold, and raised in the shadow of conquest, she was revered by loyalists—but distrusted by nearly everyone else.

The Grand Coalition (1875–Present): After his death, all of Europe seemed to exhale—and then strike. Midland, burning with rebellion, erupted in full revolt. Free Midland was declared with backing from Tudour. Randel rose in open revolt. Tudour, seeking revenge, invaded from the west and declared support for Midland’s independence. Morgar and Wallatoria, their dynasties united by the marriage of Prince Michael and Princess Anastasia, marched westward, proclaiming a holy war of justice for Reinhard’s manipulations. Harlech Confederation launched a massive blockade, followed by amphibious landings at Rostock, Wismar, and Lübeck, threatening the northern core of the Empire.

The Present State of the War (1877): The Battle of Feldbruck Plains saw the annihilation of over 103,000 Balden troops (Rosenberg’s Corps and the Fröhlich–Kaim Advance Guard), crushed by a combined Midland-Tudour force. The Eastern Front is collapsing under the Morgar-Wallatorian advance. The North is falling to Harlech marines, who are within cannon range of the capital. In the South, Randel have already crossed the Alps. The Kaiserin, refusing all surrender or abdication demands, clings to her father’s maps, shifting phantom armies across the table.
