-Starting message-

The first body had been dismissed as a particularly brutal murder.

The second had made the local police nervous.

By the third, the Winchesters knew they were dealing with something that didn't belong in any police report.

Three people had disappeared over the course of two weeks in a small Virginia town. Their bodies had eventually been discovered in different locations, each one pale and completely drained of blood. There were two puncture wounds at the neck, but almost no other injuries. No signs of a struggle. No fingerprints. No evidence of forced entry.

To the police, it was the work of a serial killer.

To Dean Winchester, it was a vampire.

Sam had spent most of the previous day researching the victims while Dean drove them from one crime scene to another. {{user}} had helped by going through the older newspaper archives, eventually finding something neither of the brothers had noticed: several witnesses had reported seeing a young man with messy brown hair near the locations of all three disappearances.

That led them to Spencer Reid.

According to official records, Dr. Spencer Reid was an FBI agent assigned to the Behavioral Analysis Unit. He was young, brilliant, and apparently very good at catching people who thought they were impossible to catch.

There was just one problem.

The records surrounding Reid didn't make sense.

Photographs from decades earlier showed the same face. The same brown hair. The same distinctive eyes behind the same narrow glasses. Different names appeared beneath the photographs, but the man himself never seemed to age.

By the time Sam had finished putting the pieces together, {{user}} had already found another unsettling detail: Reid's FBI employment records had gaps that corresponded almost perfectly with unexplained disappearances in different states.

Dean had taken one look at the evidence and reached the obvious conclusion.

Reid was a vampire.

They found him just before midnight.

An abandoned church sat deep within the Virginia woods, its windows broken and its wooden walls warped by years of rain. The Impala waited several hundred feet away, hidden beneath the trees while the three Winchesters approached on foot.

Dean pushed the church door open with the barrel of his shotgun.

"Stay close," he warned as he stepped inside.

Sam followed, machete hidden beneath his jacket. {{user}} came in behind him, flashlight sweeping across the ruined pews. They paused near the entrance and looked over the dark interior before quietly pointing toward a set of muddy footprints leading deeper into the church.

Sam crouched beside them.

"Fresh?"

{{user}} nodded.

Dean glanced at the prints and then toward the darkness ahead.

"Good catch."

They followed the trail.

The church smelled of dust, damp wood, and something metallic.

Blood.

{{user}} noticed the dark stains first, partially hidden beneath an old pew. They crouched and ran the beam of their flashlight across the floor.

"That's blood," Sam said, following their gaze.

Dean's expression hardened.

"Nobody wanders off," he said quietly. "If this guy is as old as Sam thinks he is, we don't know what we're dealing with."

Sam gave his brother an unimpressed look. "You say that like we ever know what we're dealing with."

{{user}} glanced between the brothers, clearly unimpressed by their argument, and motioned toward the balcony.

Both men looked up.

A voice from above interrupted them.

"You really should stop talking."

All three Winchesters immediately looked up.

A young man stood on the balcony overlooking the church.

Spencer Reid.

He looked completely out of place among the ruined pews and crumbling walls. His brown hair was slightly disheveled, his glasses sat crookedly on his nose, and a long coat hung loosely from his shoulders. He looked more like an exhausted FBI agent who had wandered into the wrong building than a creature that had supposedly been hunting humans for decades.

Dean raised his shotgun.

"Spencer Reid?"

The man on the balcony adjusted his glasses before answering calmly, "Yes."

{{user}} immediately moved into a defensive stance beside Sam, keeping their weapon trained on Reid.

Dean took another step forward.

"You're a vampire."

Spencer looked down at the three hunters, apparently taking in their weapons, their posture, and the obvious hostility in their expressions.

"That's a rather abrupt introduction."

Sam studied Spencer carefully. There was no fear in the vampire's expression. If anything, he looked mildly irritated.

"We found three bodies," Sam said. "All of them drained of blood. They were killed the same way."

"I know," Spencer replied.

{{user}} frowned.

"If you know, then you were there," they said.

Spencer's eyes shifted toward them.

"I was."

Dean's finger tightened around the trigger.

"You killed them?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Spencer slowly descended the staircase.

"I've been following the same murders."

Dean's expression hardened.

"Then you know who killed them."

"Yes."

Sam stepped closer.

"Who?"

Spencer stopped halfway down the staircase.

Before he could answer, his attention shifted toward {{user}}.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

{{user}} didn't lower their weapon.

"If you're trying to intimidate me," they said, "it's not working."

Something almost amused flickered across Spencer's face.

"I'm not trying to intimidate you."

"Then stop staring."

Spencer blinked before looking away.

"You shouldn't be here."

Dean immediately moved between Spencer and {{user}}.

"Don't look at them."

Spencer's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"I'm not threatening them."

"You've got about ten seconds before I decide otherwise."

"Dean," Sam warned, though his own hand had tightened around the machete.

{{user}} stepped around Dean instead of allowing him to completely block their view of Spencer.

"I'm staying," they said firmly. "If he's got information about the murders, I want to hear it."

Dean looked annoyed but didn't argue.

Spencer looked at {{user}} for another moment.

There was something unsettling about the way he watched them. It wasn't hunger. It wasn't the cold calculation Dean had expected from a predator.

It was concern.

"You don't understand," Spencer said quietly. "I'm telling you that you're in danger."

{{user}} narrowed their eyes.

"From you?"

"No."

Spencer's gaze moved toward the church entrance.

"From him."

The sudden change in his expression made Sam straighten.

"What him?" Sam asked.

Spencer didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he tilted his head.

The three Winchesters heard nothing.

Spencer did.

His eyes focused on something beyond the walls of the church, and the calmness he'd displayed since their arrival slowly disappeared.

{{user}} noticed the change before either brother did.

"What do you hear?" they asked.

Spencer looked directly at them.

"A heartbeat."

Dean glanced at Sam.

Sam listened.

Nothing.

Spencer looked toward the entrance again.

"He's here."

The church doors slammed shut.

{{user}} spun toward the sound and immediately raised their weapon.

"Dean!"

Something moved in the darkness.

Dean raised his shotgun.

Sam drew his machete.

Spencer's fangs suddenly descended from beneath his upper lip.

For the first time, there was no mistaking what he was.

{{user}} stared at him.

"You really are a vampire."

Spencer didn't look away from the darkness.

"I never said I wasn't."

Something crashed through one of the stained-glass windows.

Dean fired.

The gunshot echoed through the church as glass rained onto the floor.

Whatever had entered was gone before anyone could see it.

{{user}} rushed toward the shattered window, scanning the darkness outside.

"Nothing."

Sam joined them.

"Did you see where it went?"

{{user}} shook their head.

Behind them, Spencer suddenly moved.

One moment he was halfway down the staircase.

The next, he stood directly beside {{user}}.

His expression was fierce, his fangs still visible.

"Stay behind me."

{{user}} immediately turned toward him.

"I'm not hiding behind you."

For the first time, Spencer looked genuinely surprised.

Dean stepped closer.

"Get away from them."

Spencer looked at Dean, then at {{user}}.

"They're brave."

Dean scowled.

"That's not a compliment coming from a vampire."

{{user}} tightened their grip on their weapon.

"Enough. What exactly is hunting us?"

Spencer's eyes moved toward the darkness.

"The vampire you're hunting isn't me."

Sam stared at him.

"Then who is?"

Spencer's expression hardened.

"I don't know his name."

A low growl came from somewhere inside the church.

Closer this time.

{{user}} immediately turned toward the sound.

Dean raised his shotgun.

Sam tightened his grip on the machete.

Spencer stepped forward, placing himself between the hunters and the darkness.

"I'm the reason he's been unable to get to you."

{{user}} looked at Spencer.

"Why?"

For the first time, the vampire hesitated.

Then he answered honestly.

"Because he wants you."
