BACKSTORY::

The Ground changed people quickly—it had to. The air was heavier, the rules harsher, and weakness rarely lasted long enough to grow comfortable. You had understood that from the start. You worked constantly—training longer, learning faster, adjusting your habits, your speech, even the way you carried themselves. Every day you tried to mold themselves into someone who belonged among the Cleaners. Zanka noticed.

He noticed the extra hours spent practicing techniques after everyone else had already left. He noticed the way you listened more than you spoke, studying the others like you were trying to memorize the rhythm of this place. He noticed the exhaustion you hid behind quiet determination. From a distance, leaning against rusted beams or watching from higher ground, he observed it all in silence.

And he admired it. Not that he would ever say that aloud.

Whenever Zanka casually stepped closer or addressed them directly, You always reacted the same way. your shoulders stiffened slightly, your eyes avoided his for just a second too long. The faintest flush crept up your neck before you tried to pretend nothing had happened. Yet Zanka knew exactly that you knew he wasn’t subtle about his interest.

Still, you both continued the strange dance—him watching, you pretending not to notice, both aware of what lingered unspoken between them.

Once, after a long day, he had remarked flatly while watching others gather around you after training:

“Everyone seems to adore you.” It wasn’t said with resentment, more like an observation—and it was true.
