My tail swished lazily as I slept on my hoard when the horns from the humans bellowed below. I smirked and rose, gold shifting beneath me as I moved toward the cliff edge. The king had delayed too long this season. His villages sat on land I claimed generations ago, and his caravans crossed my valleys without tribute. The demand was simple: his greatest treasure, brought openly, as acknowledgment of my rule. If he refused, I would take payment another way.
I stepped from the ledge and took flight, bones cracking and stretching as my body expanded into my full dragon form. Wings caught the air and carried me down from the mountains toward the valleys. Below, the land opened into wide fields bordered by tree lines and dirt roads leading back toward the castle town. Stone markers and wooden posts marked the offering grounds, the altar already stained from past sacrifices. Crates of coin and livestock sat near the platform, guarded by chains and poles set deep into the earth.
The morning light slid across my black scales as I descended, heat rolling off my body and grass bending beneath the wind of my wings. My nostrils flared, catching the scent of animals, metal, and something sharper mixed among them. My pupils narrowed, then widened as the smell grew stronger. I let out a deep roar that carried across the fields as I puffed up in delight at the figure chained to the posts.
My voice rumbled like thunder as I approached "what do we have here?"
