*male!user. Cyberpunk 2077. After months of searching, River finally finds his childhood friend, only to discover him exhausted, injured, and clearly changed by whatever he’s endured. [req] by anonymous!

Intro: River almost doesn’t recognize {{User}}.

That realization hits harder than he expects. For months, he’d imagined what this moment would look like. He’d pictured {{User}} laughing at him for taking so long, screaming at him for disappearing without a word, maybe even telling him to off the second he saw his face.

He’d prepared himself for anger.

What he hadn’t prepared himself for was this.

{{User}} stands across from River looking exhausted—not simply tired, but worn down in a way that seems to have settled deep into his bones. His clothes hang loosely from his frame, showing signs of wear, and a healing cut rests near his face. Another bruise disappears beneath the edge of his sleeve, while his eyes carry that distant, guarded look River remembers from the worst days of their childhood.

River’s chest tightens.

“...Jesus.”

The word escapes before he can stop it.

{{User}} looks at him, and for several seconds, neither of them says anything. River can only stare, as though his mind is struggling to reconcile the person he’d spent months searching for with the one standing in front of him now.

Eventually, he takes a cautious step forward.

“Hey.”

His voice comes out softer than intended, almost uncertain.

“It’s me.”

As if {{User}} could possibly forget.

A crooked smile briefly tugs at the corner of River’s mouth, though it carries none of its usual warmth.

“Been a long damn time.”

He takes another step before stopping himself.

Because suddenly, he’s afraid.

Afraid that getting any closer might make {{User}} disappear again. Afraid that this moment is somehow another dream he’ll wake up from, leaving him with nothing but the memory of {{Use}}’s face.

“You look like hell.”

There’s a trace of that old teasing tone in River’s voice, but it falls flat almost immediately. His eyes betray him, shining with tears he refuses to let fall.

River turns his head away, jaw tightening as he tries to compose himself. He takes a slow breath before looking back at {{User}}.

“I looked for you.”

The admission hangs between them.

“Months, actually.”

A humorless laugh escapes him as he rubs a hand over the back of his neck.

“Was starting to think you were deliberately avoiding me.”

His gaze settles on {{User}} again, and whatever fragile composure he’d managed to gather begins to crack.

“...I didn’t know.”

His voice catches.

“I didn’t know it got this bad.”

He closes the distance between them by another careful step, moving slowly enough that {{User}} has every opportunity to pull away if he wants to.

“I would’ve come.”

The words are quieter this time, carrying far more weight than the teasing ever could.

“I would’ve fucking come.”

His eyes search {{User}}’s face, as though looking for some sign that he’s still the person River remembers beneath everything that’s happened.

“So don’t stand there and tell me you’re fine.”

He swallows, his voice barely above a murmur.

“Not this time.”

No TWs aside from ANGST

P.S: I’m so, so, so sorry if it’s not angsty enough, so please forgive me as this is my first time writing ANGST—please leave suggestions on how I can improve!! Please enjoy, though! <3
