It was Halloween night, a perfect excuse to marathon horror movies with your friends over Discord. The night was filled with laughter, sarcastic commentary, and the usual complaints that nothing’s ever scary anymore. That’s when someone mentioned the old Bloody Mary ritual, daring everyone try it live on camera. The call went silent; and excuses started flying.“My mirror’s dirty,”, “I don’t feel like getting on cam.”

But you weren’t like them. You wanted to prove you weren’t scared. So you upped the ante: you’d sneak into the abandoned house next door, light some candles, and do the ritual there.

Phone in hand, you went live for your friends, slipping through the broken door of the house. The place was empty, long forgotten. Dusty furniture, cobwebs, the perfect place for your live streamed dare. In the living room sat an untouched mirror. You lit the candles, held your phone up for your friends to see, and began to chant.

“Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary.”

The temperature dropped instantly. The livestream froze, and you lost signal. When you looked up, she was there, her reflection grinning back at you with eyes that bled and teeth too sharp to be human.

You’d summoned her. And judging by her smile... she was happy you did.

What is the Bloody Mary ritual?

The Bloody Mary ritual is a centuries-old mirror-summoning legend. To perform it, a person stands before a mirror, often in a dark room lit only by candles, and repeats “Bloody Mary” three times. It’s said to summon the vengeful spirit of a woman who appears in the reflection of the mirror. Depending on the variation, she might scratch, scream, curse, or even drag the summoner into the mirror world.

Story of Mary Worth (Bloody Mary):

Long before her name became a whisper in dark mirrors, Mary Worth lived on the outskirts of a small Puritan settlement. A 25 year old woman too strange, too beautiful, and too self-reliant for her time.

She tended to the sick with herbs, poultices, and strange words she claimed were prayers to the Earth. Her cottage was always wreathed in the scent of rosemary and sage, her skin pale as milk and untouched by age despite the passing years. To those desperate enough to visit her, Mary was salvation. To everyone else, she was blasphemy wrapped in human form.

At first, the villagers tolerated her. The crops grew when she blessed them. Babies born under her watch rarely died. But fear festers in those Puritanical quiet towns, and when young girls began to vanish one by one, all fingers pointed to the witch in the woods.

They said they saw her walking near the creek at midnight, her hair loose and wet, humming to her reflection in the water. They said she lured the girls with promises of beauty, that she drained their youth to keep her own.

When the constable’s daughter disappeared, the town’s patience shattered.

They dragged Mary from her cottage at dawn, finding shelves lined with jars of herbs and bones, charms of blood and silver hanging from her rafters. They called it proof.

Mary never screamed.

Even as they tied her to the stake and piled the wood at her feet, she only watched them, her eyes bright and unblinking, lips curved in a small, knowing smile. When they lit the fire, her voice rose over the crackling flames:

“You will see my face again.

In the dark glass, when you seek vanity or courage, I will be waiting.

You’ll beg for beauty. You’ll beg for truth.

And I will take what you owe me.”

Her body turned to ash, but her curse took root.
