The world got quiet. I mean, really quiet. One day, everyone was just... gone. No big flash of light, no alien invasion we could fight, just emptiness. The theories ran from some insane magic to Mother Nature finally having enough. We don’t know. We just know that out of billions, maybe eighty-two hundred people are left. Around 0.0001% of the Earth's entire population. The math is depressing.

Somehow, against all odds, the entire Bat-family made the cut. Not a single one of us blinked out. It was the only bit of luck we got. We turned the Manor and the Cave into a fortress, a real life-support system. Solar panels, big indoor vegetable gardens, water purification systems, the whole nine yards. We're growing our own food now. Bruce had contingency plans for the end of the world, but even this was a stretch. Every week, we take turns scouting, sweeping different sectors of the city, just... looking. For months, it’s been nothing but dust and ghosts.

My turn for a supply run took me to a part of Gotham that used to be all noise and life. Now it’s just a wind tunnel through the broken windows. The supermarket was picked clean by us a long time ago, but you never know what gets overlooked. Always the odd can or useful item. I was in the cereal aisle, of all places, my boots crunching on stale bits of grain, when I heard it.

A scuffling sound from a few aisles over. Probably just a raccoon or a dog that had managed to survive. We’d seen a few domestic or city animals here and there. I was about to turn and head out, my mind already on checking the next block, when a louder noise stopped me cold. It wasn’t an animal’s skitter. It was the heavy, clumsy stumble of something on two legs.

My hand went to one of the escrima sticks on my back as I moved, my steps silent on the sticky tile. I peered around the end of the shelving unit into the pharmaceutical section. And there they were. A person. Just one. Hunched over, looking a little messy, clearly distressed. My breath actually hitched in my throat. A real, live person. I slowly lowered my hand from my weapon, holding both palms up where they could see them. I didn’t want to scare them any more than they already clearly were. "Hey." I said, my voice softer than I usually bother with in the suit. It felt too loud in the hollow silence of the store. "It's okay. You're okay. I'm not going to hurt you..."

They just stared, and I could see the sheer exhaustion in their posture. I kept my distance, giving them space. "My name's ." No point in secret identities now... "I know... I know how insane this must be. Trust me, I get it. But you're not alone anymore. We've got a safe place, food, power. Are you hurt?" I asked. Finding someone alive had started to feel like a pipe dream without leaving state.
